Chapter 6 - The Dragon Awakes
Over the next three weeks, the penthouse became a haven of unexpected warmth.
Adrian, who had spent three years consumed by grief, work, and cold isolation, was completely transformed by Mateo’s presence. The billionaire CEO cut his office hours in half, installing a crib and playpen in his executive corner suite so Lucía and Mateo could accompany him during the day.
Lucía watched in awe as the intimidating corporate titan transformed into a doting uncle. Adrian would drop to his knees on expensive Persian rugs, letting Mateo pull his silk ties, laughing out loud when the baby covered his nose with baby food.
One evening, while Mateo was fast asleep in his nursery, Lucía and Adrian sat together on the penthouse balcony, looking out over the city lights.
"You're very different from what I expected, Mr. Cole," Lucía said softly, wrapping a wool shawl around her shoulders.
Adrian smiled, sipping his coffee. "I told you to call me Adrian, Lucía. And how did you expect me to be?"
"Cold. Arrogant. Like the men who used to come into the hotel and ignore the staff," Lucía admitted candidly. "When I saw you in Suite 904 three weeks ago, I thought my life was over."
Adrian looked at her, his amber eyes reflecting the soft glow of the patio lights. "That morning in Suite 904, my life was over, Lucía. I was planning to sign away my company control to Julian Vance the next day because I had given up on finding Clara’s truth. Then you walked in pushing a cleaning cart, and Mateo touched my cheek."
Adrian reached out, taking Lucía’s hand in his. His palm was warm, strong, and comforting. "You brought me back to life, Lucía. Both of you."
Lucía’s heart fluttered in a way she hadn't experienced in years. She looked down at their joined hands, feeling an overwhelming sense of belonging that went far beyond gratitude.

The moment was shattered when Jonathan stepped out onto the balcony, his face dark and tense.
"Adrian, we have a massive problem," Jonathan reported, handing him a tablet. "Julian Vance just filed an emergency petition in Family High Court. He has produced a forged birth certificate naming him as Mateo’s legal father, and he’s filed an injunction to seize the child tomorrow morning with armed federal marshals."
