Chapter 2 - Bloodlines and Whispers

In the aftermath of the failed night raid, the Caruso mansion was put on absolute lockdown. Tactical security patrols doubled along the iron perimeter walls, and heavy steel shutters were installed over the estate windows. Yet, amidst the tension of an impending mafia war, the bond between Arya and Ghost deepened into something extraordinary.
Ghost refused to leave Arya’s side. He accompanied her through the cavernous hallways, sat beside her oak desk during her private tutoring sessions, and slept at the foot of her bed with one ear angled toward the door. In return, Arya meticulously cleaned his wounds every morning, applying soothing ointments to the gunshot graze on his shoulder with tender, steady hands.
Vincenzo observed this dynamic from the shadows of his study. For three years, since the night his wife died and Arya lost her speech to trauma, his home had felt like a tomb. But now, watching Arya stroke Ghost's gray fur while whispering silent thoughts into the dog's soft ears, he saw a flicker of life back in her eyes.
However, peace was a luxury the underworld did not permit. Marco brought crucial intelligence to Vincenzo’s desk later that afternoon: the dog had not ended up in the fight rings by accident.
"Ghost was originally bred and trained by Leo Valetti," Marco explained, laying out surveillance photographs on the polished mahogany table. "Leo used him as a guard beast for his illegal high-stakes casino at the docks. But when the dog refused to tear apart a cornered street kid during an extortion raid, Leo tried to put a bullet in his head. Ghost tore through three handlers, escaped into the city, and was picked up by animal control."
Vincenzo’s jaw tightened. "So Valetti doesn't just want my territory. He wants his dog back out of spite."
"Worse, Boss," Marco said softly. "Valetti knows Arya took the dog. He views it as a personal insult to his authority."
That evening, as snowfall blanketed the estate, Arya sat in the conservatory drawing pictures of Ghost in her sketchbook. Ghost suddenly perked his ears, his body going rigid. He let out a low, subtle huff—not of aggression, but of deep alertness.
Arya looked up and saw her father standing in the doorway. Vincenzo walked over, sitting heavily on the wooden bench beside her. He looked at the detailed charcoal sketch of the wolf-hound, then looked into his daughter's eyes.
"He saved your life, Arya," Vincenzo said quietly. "And he belongs to you now. But hard days are coming. People want to take what is ours."

Arya picked up her brass pen and notebook. She wrote: He is not afraid. Neither am I.
Vincenzo let out a rare, bitter laugh, resting his heavy hand on top of her small shoulder. "Then we fight together."
