Chapter 7 - The Voice in the Dark

Ten minutes later, the roar of powerful engines echoed through the mountain pass.

Vincenzo had received Marco’s emergency distress beacon and arrived at the scene with a tactical convoy of eight vehicles. Dozens of Caruso enforcers flooded the woods with high-powered flashlights, expecting to find a tragedy.

Instead, they found a miracle.

In the center of the snow-covered clearing, Nikolai and his survivors were tied securely to a pine tree with tow cables.

Beside a small fire that had been carefully built using dry birch bark and emergency matches from a survival kit, sat Arya. She was wrapped in Marco’s heavy tactical coat, her arms slung around Ghost’s neck. Ghost lay beside her, panting softly, resting his heavy chin on her lap.

Vincenzo sprinted through the deep snow, dropping to his knees in front of his daughter, his face pale with utter anguish.

"Arya!" Vincenzo gasped, his hands shaking as he pulled her into a fierce, desperate embrace. "My God, Arya... I thought I lost you."

Arya pulled back slightly. She looked at her father’s tear-streaked face, then looked at Ghost, who whined softly and nudged her hand with his wet nose.

She looked at the bloody snow, the dark sky, the father who had spent three years carrying the crushing weight of his guilt, and the dog who had crossed through hell to keep her alive.

The silence that had gripped her throat since she was eight years old—the iron wall built by fear, trauma, and memory—suddenly shattered.

A small, raspy voice, fragile as thin ice but clear as a bell, broke through the howling mountain wind.

"I... I'm okay, Papa."

Vincenzo froze.

Every bodyguard in the clearing stopped in their tracks. Marco, holding a bandage to his bleeding head, stared in absolute shock.

Vincenzo looked at his daughter, his mouth open, tears streaming unrestrained down his weathered cheeks. "What... what did you say?"

Arya swallowed hard, her throat burning from three long years of disuse. She wrapped her fingers tighter into Ghost’s thick coat, looked directly into her father's weeping eyes, and spoke again, her voice gaining strength with every word.

"Ghost kept me warm," she whispered, a small, beautiful smile breaking across her face. "We beat them, Papa."

Vincenzo let out a ragged sob, pulling his daughter and her massive guardian hound into his arms, holding them as if he would never let go again in his life.
