Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

Winning the piers brought wealth, but it also exposed fractures within the Caruso organization. Suspicion mounted as to how Valetti’s hit squad had managed to bypass the electronic perimeter fence during the night raid without triggering the central alarm.
Vincenzo launched an internal investigation, using his most trusted lieutenants to sweep the estate’s communications. Meanwhile, Arya spent her days in the estate gardens, training Ghost with incredible patience.
Though Arya could not speak verbal commands, she created an intricate system of hand signals. A flat palm meant stay; two fingers tapped against her heart meant defend; a quick sweep of her arm meant flank. Ghost absorbed these commands with terrifying speed, responding to her silent hand gestures as if they were linked by a telepathic thread.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, the internal storm broke.
Luca, one of Vincenzo’s long-time bodyguards who had served the family for seven years, walked into the security monitoring room near the garage. Unbeknownst to him, Ghost was resting in the dim recess of the hallway alcove outside.
Luca pulled out a burner phone and spoke in hushed, urgent tones. "The Don is moving the shipments to Warehouse 9 tomorrow night. The girl will be alone at the house with only four guards. Disable the western gate cameras at midnight."
Ghost stood up silently in the darkness. His sharp ears captured every word, every shift in Luca’s breathing.
When Luca stepped out of the monitor room, he froze. Ghost was standing three feet away, blocking the corridor, his tail rigid, his dark lips curled back over his gums in a silent, predatory snarl.
"Get out of the way, brute," Luca muttered nervously, reaching for his sidearm.
Ghost didn't attack immediately. Instead, he let out a low, vibrating growl that vibrated through the floorboards. The sound brought Marco and Vincenzo rushing down the corridor with drawn weapons.
"What's going on here?" Vincenzo demanded.
Ghost walked directly up to Luca, nudged his right coat pocket forcefully with his snout, and looked back at Vincenzo.
Marco grabbed Luca, pinned him against the wall, and reached into his coat pocket, pulling out the encrypted burner phone. A quick search of the text history revealed thousands of dollars in wire transfers from Valetti’s front companies.
Luca’s face turned gray. "Boss... please! Valetti threatened my family—"

"You traded my daughter's life for money," Vincenzo said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. He looked at Ghost, who sat calmly beside him. "The dog knew you were a snake before I did."
Vincenzo motioned to Marco. "Take him to the basement. Find out what else he gave Valetti, then make sure he never speaks again."
