Chapter 2 - The Silent Poison

By the time Luke was settled into a quiet, dimly lit room in the PICU, the sun had begun to set over Nashville, casting long, bruised shadows across the hospital floor. Luke was sleeping peacefully, hooked up to a clear IV line that delivered steroids and antihistamines to keep the swelling from returning. His small face was still puffy, but the terrifying red welts had faded to a light pink.
Brandon sat in a vinyl armchair by the window, his head buried in his hands. He hadn't spoken a word since we left the ER. The silence between us was heavy with a truth so monstrous neither of us wanted to say it out loud.
A gentle knock at the door broke the quiet. Dr. Aris entered, holding a white paper envelope containing the preliminary laboratory toxicology reports.
"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," she said quietly, gesturing for us to step into the hallway so we wouldn't wake Luke.
We followed her out into the bright, quiet corridor.
"The lab just processed the blood work we drew when Luke first arrived," Dr. Aris explained, pulling out a sheet of paper covered in chemical metrics. "We found massive concentrations of synthesized peanut proteins and concentrated almond extract in his bloodstream. It was an industrialized, hyper-concentrated allergen solution—the kind used in specialized laboratory testing or high-grade agricultural products. It wasn't standard peanut butter or crushed nuts. It was a pure chemical extraction."
My breath caught in my throat. "A chemical extraction? But we don't have anything like that in our house. I didn't use any nut products in the cobbler. I know for a fact the flour, sugar, and berries were entirely nut-free."
"Which confirms my suspicion," Dr. Aris said, her voice dropping into a protective, guarded tone. "Someone deliberately laced that specific serving or the cream that splattered on him with a highly concentrated allergen. Given how quickly his system collapsed, this wasn't an accident, Mrs. Vance. This was an intentional poisoning. Because Luke has a latent, undiagnosed sensitivity to tree nuts that had never been triggered before, whoever did this knew exactly what would happen. Or... they were guessing, and they risked his life to find out."
Brandon stood frozen, his eyes fixed on the lab report. "My mother... she runs an agricultural research laboratory at Vanderbilt. She has access to concentrated plant and seed extracts. She’s the director of the biochemical botany department."
Dr. Aris stared at Brandon, a look of profound medical and personal horror crossing her face. "Mr. Vance, if that is true, you need to contact the police immediately. This isn't just a family dispute anymore. This is a Class A felony. Attempted murder of a minor."
"I’ll kill her," Brandon whispered, his voice completely flat, stripped of all humanity. He turned toward the elevators, his fists clenched, his entire body shaking with a murderous intent. "I swear to God, I will go to her house right now and terminate this myself."
"Brandon, stop!" I screamed, grabbing his arm, throwing my weight against him to hold him back. "Look at me! If you go there and hurt her, you go to prison. Luke loses his father. That is exactly what she wants! She wants to destroy us! She wants to prove that we don't belong, that you threw your life away by marrying me!"
Brandon stopped, his chest heaving as he stared down at me. The rage in his eyes was blinding, but beneath it was the crushed, broken heart of a little boy whose mother had just tried to kill his only son.
"Why, Sarah?" Brandon choked out, a single, heavy tear running down his nose. "Why does she hate him so much? Even if she hates you, even if she despises our marriage... Luke is her own flesh and blood. He has my eyes. He has my father’s smile. How can a grandmother look at a four-year-old boy and decide he deserves to die?"

"Because of what she said on the patio," I replied, my voice turning cold as iron as a sudden, sharp clarity washed over me. "She said, 'Your son? Are you certain you should call him that?' She doesn't think Luke is your biological child, Brandon. She thinks I cheated on you. She’s built a monstrous lie in her head to justify her hatred, and she used that lie to try and erase my son from this world."
"Then we prove her wrong," Brandon said, his voice hardening as he wiped his face. "We prove her wrong in a way she can never recover from. I’m calling Marcus."
