Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By Friday morning, our private attorney and longtime family friend, Marcus Sterling, arrived at the hospital. Marcus was an elite family-law and criminal defense attorney in Nashville—a sharp, impeccably dressed man who knew the inner workings of the city’s high society better than anyone. He had handled the estate of Brandon’s late father and knew exactly how venomous Madeline Vance could be when her authority was challenged.
Marcus sat with us in the PICU lounge, reviewing the medical lab reports Dr. Aris had provided, alongside a copy of the security footage Brandon had downloaded from our home’s patio cameras before the police could seize it.
"The footage is clear, Brandon," Marcus said, pointing to the glowing tablet screen. "Look right here. Ten minutes before the guests arrived, while you were inside getting dressed and Sarah was in the kitchen, Madeline walks up to the outdoor dessert table. Watch her right hand."
We leaned in closer. The high-definition camera showed Madeline adjusting her purple shawl with one hand, while her other hand dipped into her small silver clutch bag. With a quick, practiced motion, she unscrewed a tiny amber glass vial and emptied its contents directly into the small silver pitcher of fresh cream meant for Luke’s individual serving bowl.
"My God," I whispered, covering my mouth to stifle a sob. "She didn't just kick the bowl. She systematically poisoned it beforehand, then made sure he ate it or was covered in it."
"It’s premeditated," Marcus nodded grimly. "The police are already opening an investigation based on the hospital’s mandatory toxicology report. Metro PD will likely issue a search warrant for her office at the university lab by this afternoon. But Madeline is smart, Brandon. She’s wealthy, she has immense political connections in Davidson County, and she’s already hired the most expensive defense firm in the state."
"I don't care about her lawyers," Brandon said, his voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register. "I want her dismantled. I want her stripped of her reputation, her money, and her freedom. I want her to spend the rest of her life in a concrete cell realizing she couldn't break my family."
"Then we have to attack her on two fronts," Marcus explained, leaning forward. "First, the criminal case. The district attorney will handle that once the forensics tie the chemical vial to her lab stock. Second, we need to address the underlying motivation behind her attack. Her defense will try to claim it was an accidental cross-contamination at the laboratory, or that she had no idea the substance was toxic. But if we can prove she acted out of a specific, malicious delusion regarding Luke’s parentage, we destroy her defense’s claim of an 'accident.'"
"She thinks Sarah stepped outside our marriage," Brandon said, his hand wrapping tightly around mine. "She’s been whispering it to the aunts and cousins for years. That's why none of them stood up for Luke yesterday. She’s poisoned the entire family network against us."
"Then we use the ultimate weapon against a liar," Marcus said, producing a legal kit from his briefcase. "A court-admissible, high-fidelity DNA paternity test. Brandon, Sarah, I want swabs from both of you and Luke right now. We’ll expedite the laboratory analysis through an independent facility out of state. When those results come back with a 99.99% biological match between Brandon and Luke, we will present them at the next mandatory family estate meeting on Monday morning. We will expose her lie in front of the very people she’s been manipulating."
"Do it," Brandon said without a second thought, opening his mouth for the sterile cotton swab Marcus held out.

As Marcus took the samples and left, I looked through the glass window at Luke. He was awake now, coloring in a coloring book the nurses had given him. He looked so innocent, so entirely removed from the multi-layered war that was brewing around his life.
I turned to Brandon, my eyes fierce. "Monday morning, Brandon. We don't just defend ourselves. We end her reign."
