Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Network

The weekend was a quiet, suffocating agony. Luke was discharged from the hospital on Saturday afternoon with a strict prescription for a portable epinephrine auto-injector and orders to keep him clear of any public gatherings until his immune system fully recovered from the trauma. We took him back to our home, but the house no longer felt safe. The beautiful patio where we had hosted so many family dinners now felt like a crime scene, the broken fragments of the ceramic bowl long cleared away, but the invisible stain of Madeline's malice remaining.
By Sunday evening, the family network began to push back. My phone buzzed continuously with hostile text messages and missed calls from Brandon’s aunts, Clara and Beatrice, and his cousin, Julian.
“How dare you ban Madeline from your house, Brandon?” one message from Aunt Clara read. “She is the matriarch of this family. If Sarah can't handle a little family drama without calling the police and causing a scene at the hospital, she shouldn't have married into a prominent name. You are embarrassing your father’s memory.”
Brandon didn't reply to any of them. He simply forwarded every message to Marcus Sterling’s legal log. The absolute isolation from the people he had grown up with was breaking something inside him, but it was also forging a new, terrifying resolve. He was no longer a son trying to win his mother’s love; he was a father protecting his legacy.
At 9:00 PM, Marcus called us with the expedited DNA results.
"It's exactly as we knew it would be," Marcus said, his voice carry a sharp, triumphant edge. "The independent lab in Atlanta just uploaded the certified documents. Brandon, you are, without a single shred of biological doubt, Luke’s father. The genetic markers are an identical match. Furthermore, the lab noted that Luke possesses a rare genetic sequence on his Y-chromosome that is specific to the Vance lineage—a marker passed down directly from your grandfather."
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for four years. "Thank you, Marcus. Has the district attorney moved on the criminal warrant yet?"
"They did," Marcus confirmed. "Metro PD raided Madeline’s research lab at Vanderbilt four hours ago. They found the missing inventory log for the concentrated peanut allergen solution. Two ounces were marked as 'disposed due to degradation' last Tuesday, signed by Madeline herself. They also found traces of the exact same chemical compound in the trunk of her Mercedes."
"Did they arrest her?" Brandon demanded, his body tensing.
"Not yet," Marcus sighed. "Her defense lawyers managed to post a pre-emptive protective bond, claiming she is cooperating with the investigation and is not a flight risk due to her deep roots in the community. She’s currently confined to her mansion in Belle Meade under temporary electronic monitoring until the formal grand jury indictment next week."

"She’s sitting in her mansion while my son is afraid to eat a piece of bread in his own kitchen," Brandon said, his voice shaking with a cold rage. "Tomorrow morning is the Vance Estate Trustee meeting at the Downtown Bank Tower. She think she’s going to use that meeting to officially strip me of my voting rights in my father’s trust because of my 'illegitimate' child."
"She’s certainly going to try," Marcus said. "But she doesn't know we have the lab results, and she doesn't know we have the video footage from your patio. Tomorrow, she walks into a trap of her own making."
