Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

With a trembling hand, Mr. Harrington opened the folder instead of Madeline. He adjusted his reading glasses, his eyes scanning the certified documents inside. As he read, the color completely drained from the old lawyer’s face.
"My God," Harrington whispered, looking up at Madeline with an expression of sheer disbelief. "Madeline... this is an independent, court-admissible DNA sequence profile from the Center for Genetic Integrity in Atlanta. It’s accompanied by a Y-chromosome lineage mapping."
Aunt Clara leaned over, ripping the papers from Harrington’s hands. Her eyes raced across the text. "This... this can't be right. It says Luke is a 99.99% biological match to Brandon. It says he carries the exact same grand-lineage marker as our father."
"It is right, Clara," Marcus Sterling spoke up, his voice echoing through the boardroom like a hammer. "Luke is a Vance. He is more of a Vance than anyone else in this room because he carries the direct lineage sequence that your own sons don't possess. Madeline didn't just lie to you all for four years; she manufactured a monstrous delusion to isolate Sarah because she couldn't control her. And when that isolation failed, she tried to murder her own grandson."
"No! I didn't know!" Madeline screamed, slamming her hands onto the table as she stood up, her regal facade completely collapsing into a feral, unhinged rage. "The lab report is forged! Sarah paid off the lab! She’s a manipulative, low-class nobody who ruined my son’s life! Brandon was supposed to marry into the regional development families! He was supposed to build our name, not waste it on her!"
"Look at the second document in the folder, Clara," I said, my voice quiet but cutting through her screams like a knife.
Clara turned the page, revealing a series of high-definition color stills from our home security footage, showing Madeline clearly emptying the amber vial into Luke’s cream pitcher. Beneath the stills was the Metro PD forensic report confirming that the chemical signature found in Luke's blood matched the exact batch number from Madeline's university inventory.
The aunts and uncles stared at the pictures, then turned to look at Madeline as if she were a monster they had never seen before. Uncle Richard pulled his chair back away from her, his face filled with disgust.
"You poisoned a baby, Madeline?" Richard whispered, his voice shaking. "Our brother’s grandson? You used your own research to try and kill a four-year-old child because of your own twisted pride?"
"He’s not my grandson!" Madeline shrieked, her fingers clawing at the air. "He’s a mistake! A mistake that shouldn't have been born!"

Before she could say another word, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open. Two uniformed detectives from the Metro Nashville Police Department entered the room, followed by an Assistant District Attorney.
"Madeline Vance," the lead detective said, drawing a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. "The grand jury has just returned an indictment for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and unlawful possession of a hazardous biochemical agent. Your protective bond is revoked. You are under arrest."
