Chapter 2 - The Red Light in the Shadows

The front doors burst open as two armed security officers pushed into the foyer, their flashlights cutting through the dim entryway.
"Hands where we can see them!" the lead officer barked, taking in the horrific scene: Ashley crumpled at the base of the stairs, Patricia sobbing covered in oily residue, and Daniel standing over them with pale, shaking hands.
"Call an ambulance! My daughter fell!" Patricia shrieked, pointing up at me. "She did this! Claire invited her out here! She pushed my daughter!"
The second officer looked up at the balcony, seeing me standing calmly with my phone recording the scene. "Ma'am, stay where you are. Are you injured?"
"I'm unharmed," I stated clearly, my voice recorded on both my phone and the officer's body camera. "The young woman on the floor slipped on industrial grease. My mother-in-law, Patricia Carter, applied it to the top three steps twenty minutes ago. My husband, Daniel Carter, assisted her. They believed I was coming down the stairs at five in the morning to trigger a $1.4 million life insurance policy."
"That's a lie!" Daniel screamed, stepping toward the officers, his hands raised in fake innocence. "Officer, my wife is heavily pregnant! She’s been suffering from severe pregnancy psychosis for weeks! She’s delusional! She’s been misinterpreting everything I say!"
"Is that why there's a bucket of heavy silicone lubricant behind the pantry door, Mr. Carter?" I asked down from the railing. "And is that why the camera above the entryway just captured thirty minutes of you and your mother applying it to the stairs?"
Patricia’s head snapped toward the small black dome mounted above the pantry door. A red light blinked silently in the shadow.
The color completely left her face. She looked at Daniel, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"You... you told me those cameras were disconnected during the remodel," Patricia whispered to her son, her voice carrying across the silent foyer.
"They were!" Daniel choked out, terror finally taking complete control of him.
"I re-enabled the cloud drive three days ago," I said softly. "The exact moment I found the life insurance policy you took out on my life."
Within ten minutes, paramedics flooded the foyer, strapping a neck brace onto Ashley and wheeling her out on a gurney. She was breathing, but she had suffered a fractured collarbone, two broken ribs, and a severe concussion.
As the paramedics wheeled her out, city police cruisers arrived, summoned by the patrol officers who realized they were standing in the middle of an attempted murder scene.
A stern-faced detective named Marcus Vance took charge of the scene. He inspected the top of the stairs, stepping carefully around the slick, oily sheen covering the marble. He held a swab, collecting samples of the clear gel, while another officer retrieved the plastic container from behind the kitchen pantry.
"Mr. Carter," Detective Vance said, turning to Daniel, who was now standing near the kitchen island under the watchful eye of a uniform officer. "We have the audio recording provided by your wife’s distress call. We have the footage from your interior cloud camera showing your mother applying the substance to the top landing while you stood watch. And we have the container."
"Detective, please," Daniel begged, stepping closer, his voice dropping into the smooth, persuasive tone he used in corporate boardrooms. "This is a tragic misunderstanding. My mother has mild dementia. She was cleaning the floors—she didn't know what she was doing. I was trying to stop her!"
"You were trying to stop her by telling her she won't be able to catch herself because of the baby?" I said, walking slowly down the back service stairs—the ones safely carpeted and untouched—holding my stomach.
Detective Vance looked at Daniel, then at Patricia. "Daniel Carter, Patricia Carter, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
"You can't arrest us!" Patricia screamed as an officer pulled her arms behind her back, clicking the metal handcuffs over her wrists. "This is my son’s house! He owns this company! Claire is nothing without him!"
"This house is registered exclusively under the Bennett Family Revocable Trust," I corrected her, stopping at the foot of the stairs, looking down at the woman who had tried to end my life and the life of my unborn child. "And as of five minutes ago, Daniel’s corporate access to Bennett Development Group has been permanently revoked."
Daniel looked at me as the handcuffs locked around his wrists. The charming, loving husband had completely vanished, replaced by the desperate, bitter eyes of a predator whose trap had snapped shut on his own leg.

"Claire," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "Please. Think about our son."
"I am thinking about him," I said, meeting his gaze without flinching. "That’s why you’ll never see him."
