Chapter 3 - The Second Name

By 7:00 a.m., the sun was rising over Highland Park, casting a warm golden light across my living room. But inside, the house felt cold and hollow.

My corporate legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton, sat at my dining room table surrounded by thick folders, while Detective Vance finished taking my formal statement in the adjoining study.

"Claire," Arthur said softly, removing his rimless glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. "The police have locked down the cloud footage. The criminal case against Daniel and Patricia is bulletproof. Attempted murder, conspiracy, domestic violence. They won't get bail given the flight risk and the nature of the crime."

"That isn't everything, Arthur," I said, sipping warm tea to settle the nausea in my stomach. "Look into the financial accounts. Daniel spent four weeks trying to convince my board that I was mentally unstable. He was setting up a corporate takeover in the event of my death."

Arthur nodded, opening a encrypted laptop. "I’ve already subpoenaed the corporate bank records. But there’s something else, Claire. Something the insurance company flagged two hours ago when the police filed the attempted murder report."

I paused, setting my tea cup down. "The $1.4 million policy?"

"Yes," Arthur said, sliding a printed document across the mahogany table. "When you confronted Daniel three days ago, you saw the primary policy document naming Daniel Carter as the sole beneficiary."

"Right."

"What you didn't see," Arthur continued, leaning forward, "was the secondary addendum filed with the underwriter three weeks ago. It was a contingent policy modification that required an executive signature from Bennett Development Group."

I picked up the paper. My eyes scanned the dense legal text until they hit a bolded line near the bottom of the second page.

In the event of the primary insured's death, fifty percent of the base payout ($700,000) shall be diverted to a corporate trust entity: Apex Capital Holdings LLC.

I frowned. "Apex Capital Holdings? I’ve never heard of that company. Is it one of Daniel’s shell corporations?"

"No," Arthur said grimly. "We checked the Secretary of State filing for Apex Capital Holdings this morning. It’s a real estate acquisition firm registered in Delaware."

"Who owns it?"

Arthur turned the page over, pointing a finger at the registered manager's name.

Managing Partner: Victoria Hayes.

The tea turned to ash in my mouth.

Victoria Hayes was my head of corporate acquisitions at Bennett Development Group. She was my most trusted executive, the woman I had personally recruited three years ago, the woman who sat next to me at every board meeting, and the woman who had spent the last two months gently reminding me to "rest" while Daniel handled company operations.

Daniel wasn't just working with his mother.

He was working with my top executive.

And they hadn't just planned to collect the life insurance money—they were planning to use my death to siphon control of Bennett Development Group into a shell company co-owned by Daniel and my closest corporate ally.

My hand began to shake, not from fear, but from a rage so hot it burned away every lingering trace of shock.

"Arthur," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made my attorney look up sharply. "Call the forensic accountants. I want every communication, every email, every wire transfer between Daniel Carter and Victoria Hayes over the last twelve months on my desk by noon."

"Claire, you need to rest," Arthur urged gently. "You're eight months pregnant. You've just survived an attempted murder."

"My body is fine, Arthur," I said, standing up from the table, resting my hand over my baby boy, who kicked softly against my palm. "My son and I are alive. But Victoria Hayes thinks she’s walking into work today to execute a corporate coup. Let's make sure she gets a very different kind of welcome."
