Chapter 8 - The Final Settlement

One afternoon in late autumn, Arthur Pendelton visited my home estate.
We sat on the broad, sunlit back porch overlooking the lake, sipping warm coffee while Leo napped peacefully in his stroller beside us.
"Everything has officially been liquidated, Claire," Arthur said, handing me a final legal ledger. "The court-ordered restitution from Daniel and Patricia’s seized personal accounts came through today. One point two million dollars."
"What do you want to do with it?" Arthur asked. "We can deposit it directly into your primary trust."
I looked out across the quiet blue water of the lake.
"No," I said softly. "I don't want a single cent of their money near my family."
"Then what should we do with it?"
"Establish a charitable foundation," I instructed clearly. "The Claire & Leo Bennett Foundation for Domestic Violence Survivors. Use the entire $1.2 million as an initial endowment to build secure housing shelters and provide legal representation for pregnant women fleeing dangerous domestic situations."
Arthur looked at me, his eyes filled with profound admiration. He took out his pen and noted the instruction on the ledger. "Consider it done."
"And Ashley?" I asked, remembering my sister-in-law who had accidentally taken the fall meant for me on those stairs.

"She was released from the rehabilitation center last week," Arthur reported. "She took the small inheritance left by her grandfather—the only money her mother hadn't managed to touch—and moved to Oregon. She’s working at a local florist shop. She signed a formal waiver relinquishing any future claim or contact with you or Leo."
"Good," I said, looking down at my sleeping son. "I wish her well. But the Carters are entirely in the past now."
