Chapter 1 - The Cold Marble Floor

The freezing water from the shattered ice sculpture soaked through my evening dress, clinging to my skin as pain radiated from my shoulder down through my spine. Around me, the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel had descended into absolute chaos.
Over two hundred elite guests—donors, city officials, and local reporters—were frozen in a state of collective shock.
"Don't move her!" a authoritative voice shouted over the murmurs.
The woman in the navy suit stepped forward, placing herself between my brother Ethan and where I lay on the floor. She knelt beside me, her eyes calm and focused. "My name is Dr. Evelyn Vance. I'm a neurological specialist from St. Jude's. Lie completely still, okay? Help is on the way."
"Ethan... why?" my mother wailed, wringing her hands as she hovered uselessly nearby. "Ethan, what have you done?!"
Ethan stood paralyzed, his hands still trembling from the momentum of flipping my chair. The arrogant smirk that had plastered his face seconds ago had dissolved into a mask of pale, sweat-slicked panic.
"I... I didn't mean for her to fall!" Ethan stammered, looking around at the crowd, desperate for an ally. "She was supposed to catch herself! She stands up at home! I've seen her step out of her bed!"
"Because she has incomplete spinal paraplegia, you ignorant brute!" Dr. Vance snapped, glaring up at him with cold fury. "Nerve damage isn't an all-or-nothing switch! Being able to take two agonizing steps with crutches inside a physical therapy lab doesn't mean she can stand when you violently throw her out of a chair!"
A heavy wave of whispers rippled through the crowd. Camera flashes began going off like strobe lights. Local society reporters who had been invited to cover our family's annual charity gala were now recording the public destruction of the wealthy Sterling family.
"Turn those cameras off!" my father, Richard Sterling, demanded as he finally pushed through the crowd. He didn't look at me on the floor; his eyes immediately swept the room to gauge the legal and public relations fallout. "Security, clear this room! Out! Everyone out!"
"Nobody touches anything," Dr. Vance countered firmly, looking up at the hotel security guards. "This is an active crime scene. Aggravated assault causing severe physical trauma."
Sirens wailed in the distance, their high-pitched echoes bouncing off the hotel's exterior glass walls. Ethan took a step back, looking toward the side exit, but two heavy-set hotel security officers blocked his path.
"Ethan," I whispered through the searing pain in my shoulder, my voice raspy.

He looked down at me, his eyes wide with fear.
"You wanted everyone to see the truth," I said, holding his gaze with an unyielding coldness he had never seen in me before. "Now they will."
