Chapter 5 - The Public Reckoning

By the end of the week, the Sterling family empire was crumbling under the weight of its own dark secrets.
The District Attorney's Office formally issued arrest warrants for Richard Sterling on charges of bribery, falsifying official documents, and obstruction of justice. Ethan's charges were upgraded from simple assault to aggravated felony assault causing bodily injury, alongside new charges stemming from the reopened 2021 DUI crash.
A press conference was scheduled at the downtown Municipal Courthouse. Over fifty news crews gathered on the steps, their cameras pointed at the podium.
I sat in my wheelchair at the microphone, flanked by Marcus and Dr. Evelyn Vance.
"For five years," I spoke clearly into the bank of microphones, "I believed that my worth was defined by my limitations, and that my family's protection was something I had to earn by keeping quiet. But silence doesn't protect families—it protects abusers."
The flashes were deafening, but I didn't blink.
"Today, I am stepping forward not as a victim of a tragic accident, but as the survivor of a system designed to protect powerful men from the consequences of their actions. The Sterling Foundation, which was previously used as a tax shelter, will be completely overhauled. Effective today, seventy percent of its assets will be permanently directed toward spinal cord injury research, adaptive mobility technology, and legal defense funds for disabled abuse survivors."
Questions erupted from the reporters.
"Clara! Is it true your brother is facing up to eight years in state prison?"
"Clara! What do you have to say to your father who claims you are ruining his legacy?"

I raised my uninjured hand, silencing the crowd.
"My father didn't leave a legacy," I said quietly. "He left a paper trail. And today, that trail ends."
