Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital in a new motorized wheelchair provided by Dr. Vance’s clinic. My left arm was firmly bound in a black medical sling, but my posture was straight, my chin held high.

Accompanied by Marcus, Dr. Vance, and two senior private investigators, I entered the glass-walled boardroom on the 40th floor of Sterling Enterprises headquarters.

My father, Richard Sterling, was sitting at the head of a massive mahogany table surrounded by the company’s executive board and a legal team of five defense attorneys.

"Clara," Richard said, standing up and smoothing his silk tie, attempting to project a fatherly warmth for the benefit of the board members. "You shouldn't be out of bed. We were just discussing setting up a trust fund for your recovery—"

"Save it, Richard," Marcus interrupted, slamming a thick stack of legal briefs onto the center of the table. "We aren't here for a trust fund. We are here to execute an emergency injunction under Section 4 of the Sterling Family Charter."

One of Richard’s lead attorneys scoffed. "Section 4 only applies in cases of proven executive moral turpitude or criminal indictment of a primary shareholder."

"Read page twelve," Marcus said smoothly, taking a seat.

The room watched as Richard snatched the document, his eyes darting across the lines. As he read, the color visibly drained from his face, leaving him looking twenty years older in a matter of seconds.

"This... this is an absurdity," Richard stammered, his fingers crumpling the paper. "Supposed audio logs? Unsubstantiated claims about an accident from five years ago?!"

"The retired deputy who took the bribe five years ago gave a full, recorded confession to the State Attorney's Office two hours ago," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the boardroom. "In exchange for immunity, he provided the original dashboard camera footage from his cruiser. It shows Ethan being pulled out of the driver's seat of the burning SUV while I was trapped unconscious in the passenger side."

Several board members gasped, exchanging panicked looks.

"You're destroying this family, Clara!" Richard roared, slamming his palms onto the table. "Everything I built! Every dollar that paid for your doctors, your physical therapy, your life!"

"You didn't build this company alone, Dad," I replied calmly. "Grandfather left fifty-one percent of the voting shares in a trust for me and David when we turned twenty-five. I turned twenty-five three months ago."

I reached into my bag and pulled out the legal proxy executed by my grandfather's estate.

"As the majority shareholder, I am calling for an immediate vote to remove Richard Sterling as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board."
