Chapter 2 - The Hospital WallBy midnight, the emergency room of Metro General Hospital was quiet,

I lay in a private room, my shoulder strapped tight in a heavy brace. The MRI results had revealed a hairline fracture in my collarbone and severe contusions along my ribs, but miraculously, my damaged spinal hardware had held firm.
Dr. Vance sat in the armchair beside my bed, tapping her tablet screen. Beside her stood Marcus Sterling—my cousin and the only member of the extended family who worked as a civil rights attorney outside my father's corporate empire.
"The police took Ethan into custody at the venue," Marcus said quietly, handing me a glass of water with a straw. "Father tried to bail him out within forty-five minutes using the family's corporate retainers, but the Magistrate Judge put a temporary hold on him because of the video evidence."
"The video?" I asked softly.
Dr. Vance held up her tablet, showing a crystal-clear video clip that had already gathered over three million views online. It was the security footage from the ballroom ceiling camera. It showed everything: Ethan shouting, grabbing my wheelchair, deliberately pulling it forward with enough force to flip it, and my body slamming hard into the heavy ice sculpture.
"It went viral within an hour of the incident," Dr. Vance explained. "The public outrage is overwhelming. The narrative your father tried to spin—that it was a 'family misunderstanding'—is completely dead on arrival."
The door to my room opened, and my mother walked in. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her designer dress replaced by a wrinkled trench coat.
"Clara," Mom whispered, stepping toward my bed. "Thank God you're conscious. The doctors said you're going to be okay..."
"I have a broken collarbone, Mom," I said flatly. "And severe soft tissue damage."
Mom winced, sitting on the edge of the mattress. "Your brother is terrified, Clara. He's sitting in a holding cell right now with common criminals. You know how Ethan gets... he acts before he thinks! He's just so frustrated with his life..."
"He assaulted her in front of two hundred people, Aunt Eleanor," Marcus interrupted sternly. "Stop making excuses for him."
"He's her brother!" Eleanor cried out, turning on Marcus. "If Clara presses charges, Ethan will go to prison! It will ruin his entire future! He was going to take over the real estate division next month!"
I looked at my mother—the woman who had spent the last five years quietly minimizing my medical struggles, telling me not to 'make a scene' whenever Ethan made cruel remarks at family dinners, always protecting her golden son at my expense.

"My future was ruined five years ago when the car crash happened, Mom," I said, my voice steady despite the tears pricking my eyes. "And Ethan was driving that night, wasn't he?"
The room went dead silent. Eleanor froze, her breath catching in her throat.
