Chapter 1 - The Arrest in the Neonatal Corridor

The sterile scent of rubbing alcohol and warm infant formula hung thick in the air of St. Matthew’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The low, steady pulse of heart monitors provided a rhythmic backdrop to the sound of Bianca’s quick, shallow breathing.
"What did you just say?" Ethan stammered, taking a step backward, his eyes darting wildly between Dr. Elena Reyes and his trembling fiancée. "Blunt-force trauma? Shoved in a garage?"
"Your fiancée didn't just shove her, Mr. Cole," Dr. Reyes said coldly, keeping her arm positioned like a shield in front of me and tiny Noah’s nursery glass. "She knocked Ms. Bennett down two steps near the basement elevator bay of this very building three days ago. Ms. Bennett suffered acute internal bleeding and went into premature labor within forty-five minutes."
Bianca’s polished face went from red to an icy, chalky white. Her hand tightened so violently around her leather handbag that the gold strap strained. "She’s lying! She’s playing the victim! She staged the whole thing because she couldn't handle seeing us together!"
"It was three in the afternoon, Bianca," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper, yet holding a sharpness that made Ethan flinch. "I was coming in for my routine 32-week high-risk scan. You followed me from my apartment building, blocked my car in the garage structure, and grabbed my coat when I tried to walk away."
"You touched her?" Ethan turned his body slowly toward Bianca, his voice cracking with a mixture of sheer horror and sudden, terrifying realization. "Bianca... tell me you didn't put your hands on her while she was pregnant."
"She was carrying your child, Ethan!" Bianca shrieked, ignoring the warnings of two nurses who had stepped closer to the desk phone to dial security. "She was going to use that baby to trap you! She was going to ruin our wedding, our company, our life! I was protecting us!"
"You didn't protect anything," a heavy, deep voice echoed from the end of the tiled hallway.
Detective Marcus Vance walked into the unit, his dark trench coat damp from the rain outside. Flanking him were two uniformed police officers and my lead family attorney, Sarah Sterling, who carried a sleek leather briefcase under her arm.
"Bianca Vance," Detective Vance declared, pulling a set of stainless steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, and child abuse resulting in bodily harm."
Bianca gasped, dropping her designer bag onto the linoleum floor. "Ethan! Do something! Call the lawyers! Call your father!"
Ethan took half a step forward, but Detective Vance put a heavy hand against his chest. "Back up, Mr. Cole. The hospital garage security system captures 4K video footage with clear audio. We watched your fiancée corner Ms. Bennett, shove her into a concrete pillar, and walk away while she was lying on the ground holding her stomach."
"Ethan!" Bianca screamed as the officers grabbed her wrists, forcing her arms behind her silk dress. The click of the metal cuffs was sharp, absolute, and echoing. "Ethan, don't let them take me!"
"Mr. Cole," Attorney Sarah Sterling said calmly, adjusting her glasses as she pulled a blue folder from her briefcase. "While the officers process Miss Vance for attempted murder and assault, I am officially serving you with a court injunction. All accounts associated with Cole Global Logistics, including your personal trust funds, have been frozen by federal order."
Ethan froze, his eyes bulging. "Frozen?! On what grounds?!"
May you like
I stood up slowly from my chair, my hospital gown wrapped beneath a warm sweater, my small son sleeping peacefully behind the glass behind me.
"On the grounds that every single dollar in those accounts," I said quietly, looking Ethan dead in his eyes, "was stolen from me."
