Chapter 7 - Reclaiming the Foundation

Six months after the arrest, the sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the thirty-fourth floor of the Michigan Avenue corporate tower.

The golden letters on the frosted glass double doors had been completely restored to their original design:

BENNETT FINANCIAL & LOGISTICS HOLDINGS

Inside the corner executive office, a small wooden crib sat near the large oak desk. Seven-month-old Noah was sitting up, happily chewing on a silicone teething ring, his giggles filling the spacious room.

Sarah Sterling walked in, holding a steaming cup of coffee and a thick leather-bound binder.

"The bankruptcy liquidation for Cole Logistics was completed at noon," Sarah announced, sitting down in one of the plush visitor chairs. "We purchased back one hundred percent of the proprietary freight algorithms and shipping contracts for twelve cents on the dollar."

"And Arthur Cole's personal estate?" I asked, looking up from my laptop monitor.

"Foreclosed," Sarah replied smoothly. "His mansion in Lake Forest was auctioned off by the bank on Tuesday. He’s moved into a small rental apartment in Naples, Florida, living off his reduced pension. Ethan’s legal defense fees completely drained what was left of their family trust."

"And Ethan?"

"He accepted a plea bargain this morning," Sarah said, pulling out a court document. "Ten years in federal prison for wire fraud and tax evasion, followed by five years of supervised release. He surrendered all parental rights to Noah as part of the agreement to drop the additional state extortion charges."

I looked over at Noah, who was reaching his tiny arms out toward me from his crib. I stood up, walked over, and lifted him into my arms, holding his warm, solid weight against my chest.

"He tried to turn my life into a tragedy, Sarah," I whispered, kissing Noah’s soft cheek. "He thought because he had the title of CEO, he held all the power."

"He forgot that you were the architect of his entire world, Claire," Sarah smiled. "And architects know exactly which wall to pull down to make the building collapse."

My desk phone buzzed softly. My executive assistant’s voice came through the speaker.

"Ms. Bennett, your 2:00 PM appointment is here. The lead logistics directors from the European Union shipping portal are waiting in the main conference room."

"Tell them I'll be right there, Elena," I said.

I set Noah down in his playpen, where a certified full-time nanny—a wonderful woman named Maria whom I had hired two months ago—was waiting with his favorite picture book.

"Take good care of my CEO, Maria," I smiled.

"Always, Ms. Bennett," Maria replied warmly.

I adjusted the lapels of my white silk blazer, picked up my tablet, and walked out into the corridor to take control of my company.
