Chapter 4 - The Ruined Rehearsal

The sun rose over Chicago in a blaze of crisp autumn orange.

At the Grand Hyatt Hotel downtown, the ballroom had been decorated with seventy thousand dollars' worth of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and custom velvet tablecloths for what was supposed to be the wedding of the year between Ethan Cole and Bianca Vance.

Instead, at 10:00 AM, the ballroom was filled with federal agents, forensic accountants, and process servers.

I stood in the balcony doorway wearing a tailored black suit, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional knot. Beside me stood Sarah Sterling and Detective Vance. Down on the polished marble floor, Ethan’s father, Arthur Cole, was furiously screaming at three officers who were wheeling out three server towers from the event coordinator's office.

"This is private property!" Arthur roared, his face crimson. "My son is a respected CEO! This is a personal matter between him and his neurotic ex-wife!"

"Mr. Cole," Detective Vance called down from the balcony stairs, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Your son isn't a CEO anymore. The board of Cole Logistics met at 7:00 AM today after receiving a copy of the federal indictment. They voted unanimously to terminate Ethan Cole with cause."

Arthur turned, his eyes locking onto me. The aristocratic arrogance that had defined the Cole family for three generations shattered in an instant.

"Claire..." Arthur stammered, taking three quick steps toward the stairs before an officer blocked his path. "Claire, listen to me! This has gone too far! Whatever Ethan did to you, we can fix it! We are family!"

"We were never family, Arthur," I said, my voice cold, steady, and loud enough for every hotel staff member in the room to hear. "When I lost my mother three years ago, you told me over dinner that grief was an inefficiency. When I had my first miscarriage, you told Ethan that he needed a wife who could produce heirs without complication."

Arthur winced as if he had been slapped.

"And when your son brought Bianca into my home while I was four months pregnant," I continued, "you funded their trips to Europe using the corporate line of credit that was registered under my social security number."

"Claire... please," Arthur whispered, his hands trembling. "If the bank forecloses on the corporate credit lines, my personal assets will be liquidated. My house... my reputation..."

"You spent ten years telling me that the market doesn't care about feelings, Arthur," I replied, pulling my leather gloves onto my hands. "I'm just following your business philosophy."

Down on the floor, the hotel manager stepped up to Arthur with a iPad. "Mr. Cole, since the wedding event has been officially canceled by law enforcement, the Hyatt requires immediate payment for the remaining facility rental, floral arrangements, and catering setup. That total comes to one hundred and forty-two thousand dollars."

Arthur pulled out his black corporate card with shaking fingers and handed it over.

The manager swiped it, waited three seconds, and handed it back with a cold expression. "I'm sorry, sir. This card has been declined by federal freeze order."

I turned away from the balcony, walking back toward the quiet elevators, leaving the echoing screams of Arthur Cole behind me.
