Chapter 5 - The Glass Room

Three days later, I sat in a high-backed leather chair inside the interrogation observation room at the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. Behind the one-way glass, Ethan sat at a cold steel table, wearing an orange jumpsuit.

His polished hair was greasy, his cheeks hollow, his posture completely broken.

The metal door clicked open, and Detective Vance stepped into the interrogation room, setting a thick stack of printed financial ledgers onto the table in front of Ethan.

"You're facing fourteen federal counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and tax evasion, Mr. Cole," Detective Vance said, leaning his hands on the metal table. "And state charges of corporate embezzlement."

Ethan didn't look at the files. He stared at the reflection in the two-way glass—unaware that I was standing less than three feet away from him on the other side.

"I want to see my son," Ethan rasped, his voice ragged. "I have rights. I'm his biological father."

"You lost those rights the moment you attempted to hide the physical assault that put him into emergency surgery," Detective Vance replied flatly. "Ms. Bennett filed for emergency sole custody and a permanent restraining order this morning. The judge signed it within twenty minutes."

Ethan slammed his fist onto the table, the metal cuffs clanking against the steel anchors. "She planned this! She knew about the accounts six months ago! She waited until my wedding day to drop all of this on me!"

In the observation room, Sarah Sterling touched my shoulder gently. "Do you want to talk to him through the intercom?"

I picked up the black microphone sitting on the console desk. I flipped the toggle switch.

My voice echoed through the speaker inside the interrogation room. "I didn't choose the timing, Ethan. Bianca chose it when she pushed me down those steps."

Ethan jumped out of his chair, staring directly at the glass window. "Claire! Claire, I know you're in there! Listen to me! Bianca forced my hand! She threatened to tell the press about our financial irregularities if I didn't marry her! I never loved her, Claire! You know I only ever loved you!"

I looked at the man who had shared my bed for ten years, feeling nothing—no anger, no love, no regret. Only a profound, crystal-clear clarity.

"You loved the power I gave you, Ethan," I said into the microphone. "You loved having a brilliant accountant behind you who made you look like a genius in front of investors. But the moment I got sick, the moment I wasn't useful to your ego, you replaced me with someone who worshipped you."

"Claire, please!" Ethan sobbed, pressing his hands against the cold glass. "Don't destroy my life! I'll give you everything! I'll give you the company, the house, the money! Just drop the criminal charges!"

"The company was already mine, Ethan," I said quietly. "The money was already mine. The only thing you ever truly owned was your arrogance. And today, you're paying interest on it."

I flipped the intercom switch off.

"Let's go, Sarah," I said, turning my back on the glass. "Noah’s discharge papers are ready at the hospital."
