Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Vanessa Moore took a step backward, away from Richard. Her heavy white silk gown seemed to drag her down under the sudden, crushing weight of public scrutiny. Her face was entirely drained of color, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath.

Richard grabbed her arm, his fingers digging into her wrist with frantic energy. "Vanessa! Tell them! Tell this lying snake! You're carrying my baby! Tell my mother! Tell everyone!"

Vanessa pulled her hand away violently, as if his touch had suddenly become toxic. "Richard... stop..." she sobbed softly, tears finally overflowing her heavy eye makeup, running down her pale cheeks.

"Tell them!" Richard screamed, his composure completely shattering. The smooth, refined man of society was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal. "We had the ultrasound! We saw the heartbeat! Show them the pictures!"

I stepped closer, pulling a second sheet of paper from the folder.

"Oh, she’s pregnant, Richard," I said, my voice echoing with absolute clarity. "There's no doubt about that. Vanessa is currently sixteen weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy."

Richard turned to the crowd, a wild, manic grin bursting across his face. "You see?! You hear that?! She admits it! It’s my son! The Hale heir!"

"Except for one tiny detail," I continued smoothly, ignoring his outburst. "Three months ago, while you were busy bragging to the press about your miraculous new legacy, Vanessa visited a private lab in New Jersey. She ordered a quiet, non-invasive prenatal paternity test."

Vanessa let out a strangled wail and covered her face with her hands, sinking to her knees right there on the altar, her white lace train fanning out around her like fallen petals.

Richard froze. Slowly, agonizingly, he looked down at his crying bride, then back at me. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Read it yourself, Richard," I said, handing the paper to the officiant, who read the highlighted text at the top with wide, horrified eyes before trembling hands passed it directly to Richard.

"The test compares the fetus's DNA with a sample provided from your private safe—the hairbrush you left at your beach house," I explained coldly. "The probability of paternity for Richard Hale is zero percent."

Richard’s eyes scanned the document. The scientific terminology, the legal stamps, the DNA markers—it was all plain, irrefutable, and devastatingly clear.

"Zero..." Richard whispered, the word barely escaping his lips.

"If you're wondering who the actual father is," I added, leaning in slightly, "you might want to check the bank statements from your asset management firm. Specifically, the offshore transfers made to your junior partner and long-time best friend, Marcus Vance."

The crowd gasped in utter shock. In the back row, a handsome man in a fitted grey suit suddenly stood up, his face pale with dread, and bolted for the side exit of the chapel. Two security guards Alexander had placed at the doors immediately stepped into his path, blocking him effortlessly.

Richard stared at Marcus, then back at Vanessa, who was sobbing uncontrollably on the floor.

"Marcus?" Richard choked out, his voice cracking. "Marcus?!"

"You wanted an heir so badly, Richard," I said softly, standing tall beside Alexander, who gently wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close against his solid frame. "You were so terrified of the world knowing the truth about your body that you created a monster out of me. And in the end, your desperation made you the easiest mark in Manhattan."

Eleanor Hale let out a blood-curdling shriek from the front row before fainting outright into the arms of the shocked socialite sitting next to her.

Chaos erupted in the chapel. Cameras from secret society reporters began flashing rapidly. Guests stood up, whispering, laughing, and filming the complete, undeniable collapse of the Hale dynasty.

Richard looked around the room, his eyes wild, his entire life’s work, reputation, and pride crumbling into dust in a matter of seconds. He looked at Vanessa, who couldn't even look him in the eye. He looked at his unconscious mother. And finally, he looked at me.

I stood there, surrounded by the warmth of a man who truly loved me, guarding the three beautiful children who were my real life, entirely free from the shadows of his lies.

"This is your closure, Richard," I said quietly.

Then, I turned my back on him.
