Chapter 5 - The Fall of Hale Financial

By Monday afternoon, the elite circles of Manhattan were talking about nothing else.

The scandal at the St. Regis had metastasized into a full-blown financial catastrophe for Richard Hale. What began as a dramatic personal revelation had quickly unspooled his entire business empire. Investors, spooked by the public display of fraud, infidelity, and questionable moral character, rushed to withdraw their funds from Hale Financial.

Sitting in the sunlit breakfast nook of our penthouse, I sipped my chamomile tea while reading the Wall Street Journal.

Founder Richard Hale under fire following high-profile personal scandal and allegations of mismanaged capital...

Alexander walked into the kitchen, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, holding a tablet in one hand and a cup of black coffee in the other. He leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to my temple before sitting down across from me.

"Good morning, my gorgeous mastermind," he chuckled softly.

"Is it true?" I asked, pointing at the headline. "Did his investors really pull out that quickly?"

"Faster than expected," Alexander replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "When high-net-worth clients see a founder publicly unravel, they don't wait for the quarterly report. They flee. Furthermore, once news broke that Dr. Harrison’s medical records were subpoenaed for falsifying official documents, several high-profile legal teams began looking into Richard's previous corporate affidavits."

"He lied under oath during our divorce," I said quietly, remembering how he had claimed financial hardship to keep the majority of our shared real estate, citing the emotional distress of my "infertility treatments."

"And those lies are coming back to bite him," Alexander said coldly. "My legal team filed a petition this morning to reopen our divorce settlement on the grounds of egregious fraud, perjury, and asset concealment. He won't just lose his company, Elena. He’s going to have to repay every single cent he stole from you, plus interest and punitive damages."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the marble table.

The screen displayed an unknown, unlisted number.

Alexander glanced at it, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Do you want me to answer it?"

I paused, looking at the vibrating phone. A week ago, an unknown call might have given me a flutter of anxiety. Now, I felt nothing but utter calm.

"No," I said, picking up the phone. "I'll answer it."

I slid the green icon across the screen and put the call on speaker.

"Elena..."

The voice was barely recognizable. It was raspy, hollow, and slurred. Richard.

"Richard," I said evenly, my voice devoid of any emotion.

"You... you ruined me," he choked out, the background filled with the faint clinking of glass. He was clearly drunk, sitting alone somewhere in his emptying office. "You took everything... my mother is in the hospital... my investors left... Marcus ran off to Europe... Vanessa is suing me for emotional distress..."

"You ruined yourself, Richard," I replied calmly. "You spent years building a tower out of lies, arrogance, and cruelty. Did you really think it would stand forever?"

"I loved you!" he suddenly yelled, his voice cracking violently. "I gave you ten years! I gave you a life!"

"You didn't love me," I corrected him sharply. "You loved having a quiet, obedient wife who would take the blame for your flaws. You used me as a shield for your own medical condition because your ego couldn't handle the truth. And when you were done using me, you tossed me out and tried to humiliate me publicly."

"Please..." Richard sobbed, breaking down into pathetic, helpless tears. "Elena, please... tell Voss to stop. He’s buying up my firm's distressed debt... he’s going to bankrupt me... tell him to let me go... I'm begging you..."

Alexander reached out, taking my hand in his, his firm grip reminding me that I was no longer alone in the dark.

"It's too late for begging, Richard," I said softly. "You invited me to your wedding so I could watch you win. Instead, you just got to watch me live. Don't ever call this number again."

I tapped the red button, ending the call, and immediately blocked the number.

I looked up at Alexander, who was watching me with intense pride.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently.

I smiled, a deep, genuine smile that reached all the way to my soul. "I've never been better."
