Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

The heavy oak doors closed behind us, cutting off the deafening noise of shouting, sobbing, and flashing cameras inside the St. Regis chapel. The afternoon sun bathed the Fifth Avenue sidewalk in warm golden light, fresh air filling my lungs like a long-overdue breath of life.
Alexander didn't say a word until we were safely settled inside the dark leather interior of our custom Maybach. The triplets were already buckled into their child seats in the rear cabin, attended by Maria, happily oblivious to the emotional earthquake that had just occurred. Leo was busy pressing his face against the tinted window, while Luca and Mia shared a small velvet box of organic fruit snacks.
Alexander pulled me against his chest, his arms wrapping tightly around me. I leaned into his warmth, letting out a long, shaky exhale. The anger that had sustained me for two years—the quiet, burning drive for justice—was suddenly gone, replaced by a profound, weightless relief.
"You were incredible," Alexander murmured, kissing the top of my head, his cheek resting against my hair. "A absolute masterpiece, my love."
I let out a soft, genuine laugh, looking up into his dark blue eyes. "I thought I would feel triumphant. I thought I’d want to stand there and watch him beg."
"And?" he asked gently, brushing a loose strand of hair behind my ear.
"And I realized... he’s just small," I whispered. "He spent years making me feel like I was nothing, but watching him standing there, surrounded by his own lies... he’s just a pathetic, insecure man who destroyed his own life."
Alexander’s expression softened, his thumb gently tracing my cheekbone. "He can never touch you again, Elena. Not with his words, not with his reputation, and certainly not in the press. By sunset tonight, every financial outlet in the city will be running story angles on his firm's fraudulent practices and internal collapse."
"Did you push the story to the press?" I asked with a knowing smile.
Alexander offered a slow, dangerous smirk—the look that made Wall Street titans tremble. "I merely facilitated the truth. His primary investors have already begun pulling their capital after hearing reports of his personal and financial instability. By Monday morning, Hale Financial will be facing an emergency board meeting. By Friday, insolvency."
I laid my head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, reassuring rhythm of his heartbeat. "Thank you, Alexander. For everything. For trusting me, for standing by me... for giving me our babies."
He kissed my lips softly, a sweet, lingering kiss filled with pure devotion. "You gave me everything the day you agreed to let me into your life, Elena. You and the kids are my entire world."
From the back seat, Leo called out, "Daddy! Look! Big truck!"
Alexander smiled, breaking the kiss to turn around. "I see it, buddy. A big yellow construction truck."
"Wanna go park!" Luca demanded, kicking his little legs happily. "Park with swings!"
"You heard the bosses," Alexander said, looking back at me with a warmth that could melt ice. "To the park."
As the driver pulled away from the curb, I looked out the window one last time. In the distance, outside the entrance of the St. Regis, I could see guests pouring out onto the street in a state of utter confusion. Emergency sirens were faint in the distance, likely summoned for Eleanor Hale’s fainting spell.

I rolled up the leather sunshade, blocking the view entirely.
The past was finally dead and buried. My real life was right here in this car.
