Chapter 10 - Where the Hearth Remains

That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of gold, crimson, and soft purple, we gathered around the walnut table in the kitchen.

The old table had been completely restored. Dad had spent two weeks sanding down the old, worn finish, buffing out the scratches, and applying a deep, rich coat of natural beeswax that made the natural grain of the wood gleam like polished gold under the warm overhead light.

Sarah raised her glass of sparkling wine. "To the Campbell Historic Trust, and to the toughest forensic accountant in the state of Ohio!"

"To Laura!" Dad added, his eyes beaming with profound pride as he clinked his glass against ours.

We ate, laughed, and talked late into the night. For the first time in twelve years, there were no secrets lurking in the shadows of the hallway, no hidden agendas waiting behind soft smiles, and no fear of what tomorrow would bring.

Around 10:00 PM, after Sarah had said her goodnights and driven home, Dad went upstairs to rest.

I stayed behind in the quiet kitchen, drying the last of the dinner dishes.

I walked over to the walnut table, resting my hand flat against the smooth, warm wood. I closed my eyes for a moment, remembering the terrifying night three months ago when I had crouched beneath it in the dark, listening to the man I thought I loved plan the destruction of my family.

I crouched down slightly, looking under the table skirt.

The dark, frightening shadow that had once filled that space was gone. There was only clean hardwood, warm light, and the quiet, solid foundation of a home that had survived the storm.

I stood up, walked over to the front door, and locked the deadbolt—not out of fear, but out of a deep, peaceful knowledge that everything inside these walls was safe, cherished, and entirely ours.

I turned off the kitchen lights, leaving only the soft glow of the porch lamp shining through the glass, and walked upstairs to join the quiet warmth of a home rebuilt on truth.
