Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at Noon

Friday, 11:45 AM.

The conference room on the thirty-second floor of the Huntington Center in downtown Columbus was the epitome of corporate power. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the Scioto River, while a massive marble table sat surrounded by executive leather chairs.

Damian Ross stood near the window, wearing a bespoke navy suit, checking his Rolex every thirty seconds. Beside him sat his corporate attorney, Harold Vance—a sharp, mercenary lawyer who specialized in aggressive land acquisitions.

Sitting across from them was my father, Walter Campbell. He wore his only dark suit—the one he had worn to my mother’s funeral seven years ago. He sat completely silent, his rough, calloused hands resting quietly on the marble table.

"It's 11:50, Walter," Damian said smoothly, walking over to the table and sliding a thick stack of legal documents toward my father. "Let's sign these papers before the Vanguard representatives arrive for the closing. It saves everyone a lot of unnecessary public drama."

"You really think you've won, don't you, Damian?" Dad asked quietly, staring up at his son-in-law.

"This isn't about winning, Walter. It's about efficiency," Damian replied, handing him a sleek Montblanc pen. "Sign on the yellow tabs. Page 12, Page 18, and the master deed transfer on Page 24. Once you sign, the monthly stipend to your account starts immediately, and the private transport to the Dublin care facility will be outside your house by 4:00 PM."

My father picked up the pen, turning it slowly in his fingers.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors of the conference room clicked open.

Damian didn't even turn around, assuming it was the lender's representatives. "Ah, gentlemen from Vanguard, please have a seat. We are just putting the final signatures on the title—"

"I wouldn't sign that if I were you, Dad."

Damian froze.

The color drained from his face as he turned around slowly.

I walked into the conference room, dressed in a sharp, tailored black business suit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. Walking directly behind me was Sarah Vance, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and two senior investigators from the Ohio Division of Securities.

Damian blinked, his smooth, composed facade shattering for a fraction of a second before he caught himself.

May you like

"Laura?" Damian gasped, trying to force a confused, warm smile. "What... what are you doing here, honey? I thought you were managing a corporate audit downtown."

"I am managing a corporate audit, Damian," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "Yours."
