Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

The silence in the thirty-second-floor conference room was heavy and suffocating.

Before Damian could process the destruction of his lifelong delusion, the heavy double doors opened once again.

Three men in dark gray suits walked into the room—the senior vice president of Vanguard Commercial Capital, accompanied by two lead forensic auditors from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"Mr. Ross," the lead SEC investigator announced, stepping up to the table and flashing his official credentials. "Damian Ross, you are being served with an immediate asset freeze and cease-and-desist order by the State of Ohio. We have received comprehensive financial documentation demonstrating wire fraud, tax evasion, and securities fraud linked to Apex Horizon Assets."

The Vanguard executive looked at Damian with pure, unadulterated contempt. "Our credit facility to your firm is officially terminated, Mr. Ross. We are calling in the $12 million short-term note due by 5:00 PM today. Our legal team will be filing criminal fraud charges against you by morning."

Damian’s attorney, Harold Vance, slowly closed his briefcase, stepped away from his client, and looked at the SEC officers. "I am officially withdrawing as counsel for Mr. Ross in this matter."

"Harold! You can't abandon me!" Damian shrieked, jumping out of his chair, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched scream. "I paid you! Fix this!"

"You paid me with embezzled funds, Damian," Harold said coldly, walking toward the exit. "Good luck."

The two sheriff's deputies stepped forward, pulling pair of steel handcuffs from their belts.

"Damian Ross, you are under arrest for attempted grand theft, forgery, and financial exploitation of an elderly individual," the lead deputy announced, pulling Damian’s arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Damian struggled weakly, his eyes wild, sweeping across the room until they landed on me.

"Laura! Please!" Damian begged, tears finally streaming down his pale, ruined face. "Don't do this! We can fix this! Twelve years, Laura! We built a life together! Think about our home! Think about everything we shared!"

I walked up to him, stopping just inches away. I looked into the eyes of the man I had loved for over a decade, and felt nothing—no anger, no grief, only an overwhelming, absolute clarity.

I reached up, unclasped my wedding ring from my left hand, and dropped the platinum band into the front pocket of his suit jacket.

May you like

"The marriage was part of your plan, Damian," I whispered softly. "And this is the end of mine."

The deputies turned him around and led him out of the conference room. His pathetic, desperate cries for help faded down the long marble corridor until the heavy glass doors closed, leaving only silence behind.
