Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Unraveled

Harold Vance, Damian’s attorney, immediately jumped to his feet. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private commercial closing! Officers, you have no authority to disrupt—"

"Sit down, Harold," Sarah commanded, slapping a thick stack of federal court orders onto the marble table with a loud thud. "I am Sarah Vance, special counsel representing Walter Campbell and Laura Ross. We have an emergency injunction halting all transactions involving Apex Horizon Assets, along with a freeze order on every account associated with Parcel 402."

Damian took a step back, his eyes darting frantically between me, Sarah, and the two sheriff's deputies standing near the door.

"Laura, what is this ridiculous play?" Damian demanded, his voice tightening into a sharp, desperate growl. "Are you out of your mind? You're ruining a forty-million-dollar commercial merger! Put these papers away and let me talk to you in private!"

"There is nothing private between us anymore, Damian," I said calmly.

I opened my briefcase, pulled out a high-powered digital speaker, placed it in the center of the marble table, and pressed play.

The high-definition audio recording echoed crystal-clear through the massive conference room:

“Laura is a sweet woman, Walter, but she’s predictable... Marriage is an investment strategy, Walter... She has no idea Apex Horizon Assets already owns forty percent of the commercial parcels on this block...”

Damian’s jaw dropped. His hands began to shake violently. He stared at the speaker as if it were a venomous snake, his eyes wide with utter terror.

"You..." Damian whispered, his face turning ghostly pale. "You were there..."

"Under the kitchen table, Damian," I said, leaning over the table, looking him dead in the eye. "Under the walnut table my mother bought thirty years ago. I heard every single word of your pathetic, bitter little speech."

"Laura... listen to me," Damian stammered, taking a frantic step toward me, his hands raised pleadingly. "It isn't what you think! I was just trying to pressure your father into a deal! I didn't mean any of that! I love you!"

"You don't know what love is, Damian," I spat, my voice filled with pure, uncompromising disgust. "You spent twelve years playing a role. You stole from our joint accounts to fund your shell company. You forged a doctor's signature to try and commit my father to an asylum. And you did it all based on a lie."

I pulled out a printed copy of Richard Ross's 1998 confession diary and slammed it down in front of him.

"Read it, Damian," I commanded. "Read what your precious father wrote before he died."

Damian’s trembling fingers reached out, picking up the scanned pages of his father's hand-written journal. As his eyes scanned the text—reading his father's explicit confession that he had burned his own garage to cover his gambling debts to Detroit loan sharks—Damian’s entire body began to shudder.

"No..." Damian whimpered, shaking his head frantically. "No, this is fake... my father was an honest man! Walter ruined him!"

"Your father ruined himself, Damian!" my father spoke up, his voice booming across the conference room with a terrifying, absolute authority as he stood up from his chair. "I tried to help Richard! I offered to pay his debts! But he burned the shop down while I was at home with my sick wife! I spent thirty years paying for his sins, and you spent twelve years trying to make my daughter pay for yours!"

Damian collapsed into an executive leather chair, staring blankly at the pages in his hands, his entire reality completely disintegrated.
