Chapter 7 - The Aftermath

The fallout was spectacular. Thorne was arrested that night, and the Blackwood Group collapsed in the days that followed. The market corrected, the Vance stock price soared, and the investigations into our firm were dropped, the authorities satisfied with the transparency we provided.
I went back to the estate, feeling a sense of peace I hadn't known in months.
Leo was waiting for me in the nursery, his laughter a sweet, high melody. I picked him up, holding him to my chest, and felt the weight of everything I had been through dissolve.
Eleanor was in the garden, sitting on the bench. I joined her, the sun setting in a blaze of orange and violet.
"You did it," she said, her voice soft.
"We did it," I corrected.
"No," she said. "You did it, Olivia. You saved the legacy."
"It’s not just a legacy, Eleanor," I said. "It’s a life. It’s my life, and Leo’s."
She nodded, looking out over the grounds. "I never told you this, but your grandfather... he was like you. He didn't care about the money. He cared about the people, the work, the truth."
"I think I’m beginning to understand that," I said.
A few months later, the estate was quiet. The war was over. Arthur was in prison, Thorne was awaiting trial, and the Vance Group was thriving.
I was sitting in my office, preparing for a business trip, when Leo walked in. He was wobbling on his tiny feet, his face full of wonder.
I dropped my paperwork and scooped him up, kissing his chubby cheeks. He giggled, a sound that made me feel more powerful than any boardroom could.
My phone rang. It was Julian Anderson.
"Ms. Vance," he said. "I have good news. We’ve recovered the remainder of the embezzled funds from Arthur’s hidden assets. And we’ve secured the rights to the Blackwood Group’s European shipping routes. The Vance Group is now the largest player in the market."
"Thank you, Julian," I said.
"Is there anything else, ma'am?"
May you like
"No," I said, looking at Leo. "I have everything I need."
I hung up the phone and walked to the window. The world was vast, complex, and sometimes dangerous. But I was no longer afraid. I had faced the darkness and survived. And as long as I had Leo, as long as I had the strength I had discovered within myself, I knew I would always hold the line.
