Chapter 8 - The New Era

The following year was one of building. We weren't just managing the empire; we were innovating. I pushed for sustainable shipping practices, invested in green energy projects, and made the Vance Foundation a global leader in education and disaster relief.

My reputation changed. I wasn't just "the heiress" anymore. I was a leader. A force to be reckoned with.

I still saw Arthur occasionally, but only through a glass partition at the federal prison. He looked old, broken, and humbled. He never asked for money again. He only asked about Leo.

"He looks like you," he said during our last visit. "He has your eyes."

"He has his own life, Arthur," I said. "And it’s a good one."

He nodded, a tear tracking down his cheek. "I’m sorry, Olivia. I know it’s too late, but I’m sorry."

"It’s not about forgiveness, Dad," I said. "It’s about moving forward."

I left the prison feeling a sense of closure.

Eleanor was getting older, and she spent more time in the gardens, watching Leo play. We talked about everything—the past, the future, the weight of the name we carried.

"You know," she said one afternoon, "you were always the one meant for this, Olivia. I just needed you to realize it."

May you like

"I did," I said. "I just had to go through hell to get there."

"Hell is just a furnace, my dear," she said, tapping my hand. "It burns away everything that isn't made of steel."
