Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Execution

Friday, 9:30 AM.
The Grand Ballroom suite on the fortieth floor of the Drake Hotel was a masterpiece of corporate luxury. Panoramic glass windows offered a sweeping view of Lake Michigan.
Inside, twenty senior executives from Pfizer-Global, alongside high-profile venture capitalists, legal teams, and press representatives, sat around a thirty-foot mahogany conference table.
At the head of the table sat Ethan Cole—dressed in a three-thousand-dollar tailored Brioni suit, his hair slicked back, trying desperately to hide the dark circles under his eyes.
Beside him sat Madeline Ross, wearing a sparkling Chanel dress, looking nervous, nervously twisting her diamond ring. Standing near the back of the room, dressed in her finest velvet coat, was Vivian Cole, holding a glass of morning champagne, smiling proudly at her son.
Ethan cleared his throat, leaning toward the microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the acquisition board," Ethan announced, his voice regaining its smooth, salesman confidence. "Today marks the culmination of five years of groundbreaking research at Vance Bio-Tech. We are ready to sign the final transfer agreement."
The lead attorney for Pfizer slid a heavy leather-bound document across the table.
"Mr. Julian Vance," the attorney said, handing him an expensive fountain pen. "Upon your signature, thirty-two million dollars will be wired directly into the primary corporate account of Vance Bio-Tech, with the remaining eight million held in escrow."
Vivian let out a soft, ecstatic sigh from the back of the room. Madeline squeezed Ethan’s arm tightly.
Ethan took the pen. His hand was trembling slightly, but a victorious, arrogant smile touched his lips. He lowered the nib toward the signature line.
BANG.
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom were slammed open.
Every head in the room snapped around.
Two dozen federal agents from the FBI and the IRS, dressed in dark blue tactical jackets with gold lettering, poured into the ballroom, sweeping the perimeter.
At the front of the procession stepped Victoria Sterling, Marcus Vance, and me.
I wore a floor-length emerald coat, my hair styled impeccably, walking slowly down the center aisle of the ballroom, the sound of my heels clicking against the marble floor echoing like thunder.
Vivian gasped, dropping her champagne glass. The crystal shattered across the floor. "Claire?!"
Ethan dropped the pen. He stood up so fast his chair fell backward, slamming onto the carpet. "What... what is this?!"

Lead Special Agent Miller of the FBI stepped to the front of the table, pulling an official red-stamped federal document from his coat.
"Julian Vance—also known as Ethan Cole," Agent Miller announced, his voice booming through the silent room. "By order of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, this meeting is shut down immediately."
