Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The ballroom exploded into absolute chaos.

"What is the meaning of this?!" the Pfizer lead attorney shouted, standing up and backing away from the table. "Who are these people?!"

"I am Victoria Sterling, legal counsel for Mrs. Claire Cole," Victoria announced smoothly, projecting her voice across the room. "The man sitting before you, posing as 'Julian Vance,' is Ethan Cole—a fugitive from federal justice who faked his death five years ago to escape an ongoing embezzlement indictment."

Gasps erupted from the Pfizer executives.

"That’s a lie!" Madeline screamed, jumping out of her seat. "He’s Julian Vance! His name is legal! Show them your ID, Julian! Show them!"

"Shut up, Madeline!" Ethan shouted, his face going completely purple.

Agent Miller pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "Ethan Cole, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, bank fraud, tax evasion, identity theft, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny."

"No! No!" Vivian shrieked, running forward from the back of the room, grabbing Agent Miller’s arm. "You can't do this! My son is innocent! Claire is crazy! She’s doing this out of jealousy because my son left her!"

I stepped directly into Vivian’s path.

I looked down at the woman who had pretended to be my mother for five years, who had eaten my food, lived on my money, and mocked my grief behind closed doors.

"Agent Miller," I said calmly, pulling a sleek tablet from my handbag. "Here are the certified bank logs showing Vivian Cole’s personal involvement in laundering four point two million dollars stolen from my estate into L.F. Horizon Trust to fund Ethan's fake identity."

Agent Miller looked at the secondary officers. "Vivian Cole, you are under arrest as a co-conspirator to federal fraud and money laundering."

A female FBI agent stepped forward, grabbing Vivian’s hands and snapping handcuffs around her wrists.

"Claire! Claire, please!" Vivian wailed, her pristine velvet coat disheveled, her hair falling out of its neat bun as she was forced onto her knees. "I’m an old woman! You can't let them do this to me! I loved you like a daughter!"

"You didn't love me, Vivian," I said, my voice cold as arctic ice. "You loved my bank account. And now you can spend the rest of your twilight years in a federal prison cell, enjoying the pot roast."

Across the table, Ethan tried to bolt toward the side exit.

Two FBI agents tackled him directly over the mahogany conference table. Laptops crashed, glasses shattered, and paperwork flew into the air as Ethan was slammed onto the carpet.

CLICK.

The handcuffs snapped tightly around Ethan’s wrists.

Madeline collapsed onto the floor, sobbing hysterically as corporate lawyers and press photographers captured every second of the humiliation on their phones.

Ethan was lifted to his feet. His three-thousand-dollar suit was torn, his hair ruined, his face smeared with sweat and tears. He looked at me, his eyes filled with pure, pathetic terror.

"Claire..." Ethan sobbed, his knees buckling. "Claire, please... don't do this to me... I’m your husband..."

I stepped right up to him, leaning in until my lips were inches from his ear.

"My husband died five years ago, Ethan," I whispered softly. "You're just a ghost... and ghosts belong in the dark."
