Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the Foundation

Six months later.

The summer sun was warm and golden over the skyline of downtown Chicago.

I stood on the roof terrace of my firm’s brand-new corporate headquarters—a stunning fifteen-story glass-and-timber structure overlooking Lake Michigan.

The building had just won the American Architecture Prize for Sustainable Innovation, funded entirely by the liquidated proceeds of Vance Bio-Tech and the Cole family assets.

Down in the main lobby, over two hundred guests—city officials, international architectural partners, and media representatives—were celebrating the grand opening of The Claire Cole Design & Innovation Center.

Jenna walked out onto the terrace, holding two glasses of champagne, wearing a stunning designer dress.

"The board is ready for your opening speech, Claire," Jenna said, handing me a glass with a proud, radiant smile.

I took the glass, looking out over the blue waters of Lake Michigan where I had once stood five years ago, weeping, believing my life was over.

"How are the court proceedings finishing up, Jenna?" I asked softly.

"Ethan’s plea deal was officially finalized yesterday," Jenna reported. "Twenty-two years at Terre Haute Penitentiary. Vivian was sentenced to ten years at Alderson Federal Prison. The Lake Forest estate sold at auction for six point eight million dollars this morning—and the funds hit your corporate account an hour ago."

I took a slow sip of champagne, feeling a deep, profound sense of quiet liberation settle into my soul.

The ghost had been exorcised. The darkness had been burned away by the light of absolute justice.

"Are you ready to go down, Claire?" Jenna asked gently.

"In a minute, Jenna," I smiled. "I just want to enjoy the view."
