Chapter 4 - Striking Back

Two weeks later, Elle received a legal notice that made her laugh out loud in her office. Ryan, represented by a notoriously dirty, aggressive divorce attorney named Richard Fox, was suing for full custody of the twins, a demanding monthly spousal support payment of fifty thousand dollars, and half of Vertex Dynamics' assets.

The narrative they were pushing to the media was vicious: Elle was an emotionally unstable, vindictive billionaire who was using her immense wealth to alienate a loving father from his children and financially ruin him out of spite.

"They are trying to play the public sympathy card," Mark Vance said, pacing Elle's office. "Richard Fox is a shark. He's going to try to paint you as an unfit mother who is too busy running a global empire to care for four-month-old infants."

Elle looked out the window, watching the city skyline. "Let them try. Ryan doesn't even know the names of our pediatricians. He doesn't know their allergy profiles. He has never changed a single diaper in his life. He thinks legal battles are won by who screams the loudest in the tabloids."

"We need to be careful, Elle," Mark warned. "They’ve requested a public temporary custody hearing. They want the cameras in the courtroom."

"Give them the cameras," Elle said, turning around with a sharp, dangerous smile. "In fact, encourage it. Let Ryan have his stage. It will be the last one he ever stands on."

To prepare for the battle, Elle hired a team of private investigators to dig deep into Ryan’s past actions during their marriage. She had been too blind by love back then to notice the red flags, but now, her eyes were wide open.

The investigators didn't take long to find gold. Ryan hadn't just been emotionally abusive; he had been careless.

On the day of the hearing, the courthouse was surrounded by reporters. Ryan arrived wearing a cheap, borrowed suit, looking intentionally haggard and tired to gain sympathy. He walked past the cameras with his head bowed, his mother Clara clutching his arm, playing the role of the grieving, supportive grandmother.

Elle arrived looking immaculate in a cream-colored suit. She walked with a steady, unshakeable grace, ignoring the shouted questions from the media.

Inside the courtroom, Judge Evelyn Montgomery, a no-nonsense woman with thirty years on the bench, banged her gavel to call the session to order.

Richard Fox stood up first, his voice booming. "Your Honor, we are here today to witness a tragic abuse of power. My client, Ryan Collins, is a dedicated, hardworking man who was brutally cast out of his home and his job by a multi-billionaire wife who used her corporate empire as a weapon. She has kept his beautiful twin babies from him, denying them a father's love simply because of a marital dispute. We ask for immediate temporary full custody and an injunction against her freezing his marital assets."

The reporters in the gallery scribbled furiously. Ryan wiped a fake tear from his eye.

Judge Montgomery turned her sharp gaze to Elle’s table. "Ms. Vance-Rothschild, what say you?"
