Chapter 2 - The Tactical Sanctuary

The warmth of Julian Vance’s private medical transport was the most painful thing I had ever experienced. As the advanced heating units began to thaw my frozen limbs, a million needles seemed to pierce my skin all at once. I cried out, a weak, pathetic sound, but a warm hand instantly gripped mine.

"Keep her stable," Julian’s voice barked from somewhere above me. He was standing over the gurney, his face dark with an intense, calculated anger. "If either of those children drops a single degree in temperature, I will personally shut down this medical network."

"They're stable, Mr. Vance," a private paramedic replied, adjusting the specialized infant warming pods that now held my son and daughter. "The mother's immediate skin-to-skin contact saved their lives. It's a medical miracle they didn't suffer severe hypothermia."

I turned my head weakly, my eyes tracking the two glass pods beside my bed. They were tiny, their skin pink now under the warming lights, their small chests rising and falling in a rhythmic, beautiful dance.

"Where..." I croaked, my throat raw from screaming in the cold. "Where are we going? Not the municipal hospital. Derek... he has contacts there."

Julian leaned down, his striking gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that forced me to focus through the haze of pain. "We are going to my private residential clinic in the hills. No records, no digital intake, no public footprint. As far as the world is concerned tonight, Caroline, you and your children ceased to exist at 9:00 p.m."

"Derek... he thinks he succeeded," I whispered, a tear freezing on my cheek before melting in the warm air of the ambulance.

"Let him think it," Julian said, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "A man who thinks he has gotten away with murder becomes careless. He starts spending the money he hasn't inherited yet. He stops looking over his shoulder. And that is exactly when we will dismantle him."

The transport pulled into a secured, subterranean garage twenty minutes later. I was wheeled into a state-of-the-art medical suite that looked more like a luxury penthouse than a clinic. Soft lights, velvet drapes, and a team of three private doctors were waiting for us. Within an hour, I was warm, medicated, and holding my babies in a double bassinet right next to my bed.

Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the rain-slicked city streets below. He had changed into a clean black shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with tension.

"Why are you doing this, Julian?" I asked, my voice finally regaining its steady tone. "You don't know me. You hate my husband."

"I hate your husband because he is a parasite who uses people’s lives as currency," Julian said, turning to face me. "Three years ago, Derek sabotaged my logistics firm, causing a collapse that cost five of my men their lives. He blamed it on a system failure, but I knew the truth. I just lacked the definitive evidence to put him in a cage without him using his family's judges to slide out of it."

He walked over to the side of my bed, looking down at the sleeping twins. "But tonight, he crossed a line that even the shadow world doesn't tolerate. He tried to slaughter a mother and her newborns. You are the ultimate evidence, Caroline. Your survival is his execution warrant. I'm going to give you the resources to take everything from him—his freedom, his reputation, and his fortune."

He reached into his pocket and placed a sleek, encrypted smartphone on my bedside table. "The first step begins tomorrow. Derek is currently hosting an emergency board meeting at your father's old company, preparing to declare you missing and claim executive control of your shares. It's time to let him play his hand."
