Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Syndicate

The corporate kingdom Derek had spent three years building through betrayal and blood collapsed within hours of his arrest. The news of the "Freezer Twins" scandal swept across global networks, completely obliterating the Sterling stock value and forcing the board of directors to issue an emergency statement stripping Derek of all titles and positions.
I sat in Julian’s private office downtown, looking at the mountain of legal documents Julian’s team had compiled. Leo and Maya were sleeping peacefully in a portable playpen beside the desk, completely unaware that their birth had just brought down a corporate empire.
"He's refusing to speak to the federal investigators," Julian said, walking in with a fresh set of files. He looked exhausted but possessed a sharp, victorious energy. "He's still convinced his network of corrupt judges can get him out on bail."
"Can they?" I asked, looking up at him, the old fear trying to resurface.
"Not a chance," Julian said, sitting on the corner of the desk, his gray eyes full of an unyielding reassurance. "My brother Marcus is the lead federal prosecutor on this case. We have already tied Derek’s offshore accounts to a series of bribes directed at Judge Avery. Avery was arrested at his country club an hour ago. The entire circle of protection Derek relied on is being systematically dismantled as we speak."
He reached out, his long fingers gently touching Leo's small fist through the playpen netting. "But we found something else during the raid on Derek’s private safe house, Caroline. Something that changes the scope of what he was trying to do."
He handed me a leather-bound journal bearing my father’s old corporate seal. I opened it, my eyes widening as I scanned the dates. It was my father's private diary from the months leading up to his sudden "heart attack" two years earlier.
"My father didn't die of natural causes, did he?" I whispered, my throat tightening as I read my father's increasingly frantic notes about Derek sabotaging the company’s safety protocols.
"No," Julian said quietly. "Derek was poisoning his medication to accelerate the inheritance timeline. Your father realized what was happening too late, but he managed to hide this journal where Derek couldn't find it. Derek didn't just try to kill you and the babies, Caroline. He murdered your father to get his hands on the Sterling throne."

The depth of the depravity made me sick to my stomach. I leaned back in the chair, a single tear escaping my eye. I had married a monster, a man who had systematically targeted my entire bloodline for the sake of a balance sheet.
Julian stepped closer, his large hands resting gently on my shoulders, his warmth cutting through the cold memory of my marriage. "He is never coming back, Caroline. I promise you. He will spend the rest of his natural life behind a concrete wall."
