Chapter 3 - The Crocodile’s Ascent

The morning news broadcast played silently on the massive television screen in my suite. The headline running along the bottom read: “PROMINENT HEIRESS CAROLINE STERLING REPORTED MISSING; HUSBAND ISSUES DESPERATE APPEAL.”
The camera cut to the steps of the Sterling Corporate Headquarters. Derek stood before a wall of microphones, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his eyes red-rimmed, a crisp white handkerchief clutched in his hand. He looked like the picture-perfect definition of a distraught, grieving husband.
"My wife was last seen entering the Westside catering depot last night," Derek told the reporters, his voice cracking with rehearsed emotion. "She has been under immense stress due to her high-risk pregnancy. We are praying for her safe return, and the return of our unborn twins. I am offering a half-million-dollar reward for any information regarding her whereabouts."
I sat in my bed, a cold, unyielding fury settling deep into my bones as I watched him squeeze out a single, calculated tear. The babies were nursing quietly, their small hands pressing against my skin. They were no longer nameless; I had decided to name them Leo and Maya. Strong names. Names that would outlast the wreckage their father had tried to cause.
"He's a very good actor," Julian said, entering the room with a silver tray holding fresh coffee and breakfast. He looked at the television screen with an expression of pure disgust. "He spent the night transfer-printing your signature onto three different corporate authorization forms. My cybersecurity team intercepted the server logs. He's currently trying to liquidate your family's offshore holdings in the Cayman accounts."
"Can he do it without my physical presence?" I asked, my grip tightening around Leo’s small blanket.
"He can if he presents a signed affidavit stating that you are incapacitated or missing, backed by a complicit judge," Julian explained, sitting in the armchair beside me. "And he just happens to have Judge Avery on his payroll. The hearing to grant him temporary executorship of the Sterling Estate is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m."
"We have to stop him," I said, looking up at Julian. "If he gets those funds, he can buy his way out of the country before we can even file the attempted murder charges."
"We aren't going to stop the hearing, Caroline," Julian said, his gray eyes flashing with a brilliant, tactical light. "We are going to let him stand in front of that judge, surrounded by the media, his board of directors, and his lawyers. He is going to swear under oath that he has no knowledge of your location and that you are legally missing."
May you like
He reached over, his hand resting over mine on the mattress. His warmth was a steady anchor. "And then, you are going to walk through those courtroom doors with Leo and Maya in your arms."
The sheer drama of the plan made my heart race, but I knew Julian was right. In the world of high finance and corporate law, a private accusation could be buried by expensive defense attorneys. But a public resurrection in front of a federal judge and a dozen news cameras? That was a death blow that no amount of money could erase.
