Chapter 2 - The In-Laws Strike Back

The attack came from all fronts less than twelve hours later.

I awoke at six in the morning to my phone buzzing relentlessly against the nightstand. When I picked it up, there were sixteen missed calls, four voicemails, and dozens of text messages, primarily from my mother-in-law, Linda, and Daniel’s younger sister, Megan.

Linda: Maya, what is the meaning of this childish behavior? Daniel said you blocked the family account transfers! You are putting your father-in-law’s health at risk with this stress! Call me immediately!

Megan: Seriously Maya??? My phone got disconnected this morning during a work call! You are literally ruined my life right now. Send the money today or I’m telling everyone what a terrible person you are.

Robert: You don’t treat family like this, young lady. We welcomed you into this home.

I chuckled quietly to myself while sipping my morning coffee on the back patio. The sheer audacity was almost impressive. Welcomed me into this home? Daniel and I bought our Portland house with a down payment comprised entirely of my pre-marital savings and a generous gift from my parents. The Whitakers hadn't contributed a single dollar.

At 9:00 AM, while I was sitting in my home office preparing for a virtual client meeting, the doorbell rang continuously, followed by heavy pounding on the front door.

I walked downstairs, looked through the peephole, and saw Linda standing on the front porch, arms crossed, flanked by Megan.

I opened the door, keeping the security screen locked between us. "Good morning, Linda. Megan."

"Unlock this door right now, Maya!" Linda demanded, her face caked in heavy foundation that couldn't hide her scowl. "We need to talk about this ridiculous stunt you're pulling!"

"There's no stunt," I replied calmly. "Daniel and I came to a mutual agreement regarding our finances. Separate accounts, separate family responsibilities. If you have concerns about your allowance, you need to address them directly with your son."

"Allowance?!" Megan shrieked from behind her mother. "It's family support! You make over six figures, Maya! What difference does a couple thousand dollars make to you? You're hoarding money while your husband's family suffers!"

"My money belongs to me," I said, looking Megan straight in the eye. "Just as Daniel’s money belongs to him. When my mother needed heart surgery, your brother told me my family was my problem. So, I am focusing my resources on my family. You are Daniel's family. Take it up with him."

"He doesn't have the money!" Linda snapped, losing her temper completely. "He called us last night! He can't pay my mortgage and his father's truck payment on his current salary! If you don't reinstate the transfers by five o'clock today, I will make sure everyone in our social circle knows what kind of cold-hearted, greedy snake Daniel married!"

I smiled gently—the same polite, razor-sharp smile I had given Daniel.

"Linda, if you step off my porch right now, I won't call the police for trespassing. And if you ever threaten me again, I will have my attorney draft a formal cease-and-desist letter. Have a wonderful afternoon."

May you like

I closed the heavy wooden door, turned the deadbolt, and listened as Linda screamed obscenities on the porch before finally stomping back down the driveway.

My hands weren't shaking. My heart wasn't pounding. For years, I had walked on eggshells to earn their approval, afraid of being labeled a bad daughter-in-law. Now that the mask was off, I realized their opinion held no power over me at all.
