Chapter 4 - The Ultimatum & The Move Out

When Daniel returned home two days later, he walked into the house with a swagger that suggested he thought he had won a psychological war of attrition. He carried a leather briefcase and wore a smug expression.

"Alright, Maya," he said, setting his briefcase on the kitchen island where I was drinking tea. "I spoke with my parents. They're willing to forgive your behavior from earlier this week if you agree to a compromise."

I set my cup down quietly. "A compromise?"

"Yes," Daniel said, pulling out a chair and sitting down. "We bring back the monthly support, but we cap it at $2,000 instead of $2,500. In exchange, my mom will apologize for coming to the house, and we'll start fresh. I'll even help you set up a payment plan for your mom's hospital bill out of your personal account."

He looked at me expectantly, clearly believing he was offering a generous olive branch.

I reached into my tote bag, pulled out a manila folder, and slid it across the marble counter.

"What's this?" Daniel asked, his brow furrowing.

"That," I said, "is a formal financial demand letter, alongside a notice of legal separation."

Daniel's smile evaporated. He snatched the folder and flipped through the pages. As his eyes scanned the bank statements, the Secretary of State filings for Whitaker Holdings LLC, and the highlighted credit card receipts, the color drained completely from his face.

"Where... where did you get this?" he stammered, his voice dropping an octave.

"You thought you were clever, Daniel," I said, my voice ice cold. "You manipulated me into paying $2,500 a month out of my paycheck to support your family's daily lifestyle, while you secretly embezzled over $45,000 from our joint accounts to fund a beach house in Cannon Beach under an LLC with your sister."

"It's an investment for our future!" Daniel yelled defensively, slamming the paper onto the counter. "I was going to surprise you once it started generating rental revenue!"

"Don't insult my intelligence," I replied sharp as a razor. "Your name and Megan's name are on the deed. My name is nowhere on those papers. You used my labor and my salary to build an asset for your family while leaving me to absorb all the household expenses."

"Maya, please—"

"You told me thirty days ago that my parents were my problem, and my money was mine," I said, standing up to face him. "You were right about one thing: my money is mine. And starting today, you have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes, remove your personal belongings, and vacate this house."

"This is my house too!" Daniel barked, standing up and trying to intimidate me with his height.

"This house was purchased with my pre-marital assets, and the title is in my name alone," I reminded him coldly. "My attorney has already filed a temporary motion for exclusive occupancy. If you are not gone by Sunday evening, the sheriff's department will escort you off the premises."

Daniel stood frozen, staring at me as if looking at a complete stranger. The weak, accommodating woman he had taken for granted for four years was officially gone.
