Chapter 6 - The Truth Exposed

Word travels fast in close-knit communities, but I decided to ensure the truth traveled faster.
For years, Linda Whitaker had paraded around her local social circle, church group, and extended family boasting about how successful her son was and how she had raised such a "generous, provider-minded boy." She had subtly dropped comments implying that I was a "cold, career-obsessed woman" who didn't care about family values.
That narrative came to a screeching halt at Linda’s sister’s annual charity gala—an event Daniel and I had attended every year, and one where I was usually expected to write a large donor check.
Although Daniel and I were separated, I was still officially invited by his aunt, who had always been kind to me and was entirely unaware of the ongoing drama. I dressed in an elegant navy silk gown, brought Sarah as my guest, and arrived composed and confident.
When Linda saw me walk into the ballroom, her face turned pale. She immediately hurried over, dragging Daniel by the elbow.
"What are you doing here?" Daniel hissed under his breath, looking disheveled in an ill-fitting suit. "You don't belong here after what you're doing to my family!"
Several prominent community members and extended family members turned to look.
"I was invited by Aunt Clara," I said loudly enough for the surrounding table to hear clearly. "And as one of the primary donors to this foundation, I felt it was important to attend."
"You're just here to embarrass us!" Linda snapped in a harsh whisper. "You cut off my family's livelihood out of pure malice!"
Aunt Clara stepped forward, confused. "Cut off your livelihood? Linda, what are you talking about? Daniel told us he was supporting you with his executive salary."
I looked around the growing circle of onlookers and smiled politely.
"Oh, did Daniel tell you that?" I asked innocently. "The truth is, Aunt Clara, for three years I paid $2,500 a month to fund Linda's mortgage and Robert's truck. But last month, when my mother needed heart surgery, Daniel told me my sick parents were my problem and that my money was mine while his was his. So, I took his advice and stopped funding them."
Gasps echoed through the small group.
"And to make matters worse," Sarah added smoothly, stepping up beside me, "we recently discovered Daniel was secretly transferring money from their joint accounts into an offshore LLC to buy a beach property exclusively in his and his sister's names."
The room fell into stunned silence. Megan, who was standing near the bar holding a cocktail, dropped her glass. It shattered against the tile floor.
Daniel’s face flushed bright red as every eye in the room landed on him with disgust. His aunt Clara stared at him in utter horror.

"Daniel... tell me she's lying," Clara whispered.
Daniel opened his mouth, but no words came out. He looked around the room, realizing that his mask of a successful, dutiful son had been completely torn away in front of everyone who mattered to him. He turned on his heel and rushed out of the venue, with Linda and Megan scurrying behind him like startled mice.
