Chapter 4 - The In-Law Ambush

Two days later, as I walked out of the corporate office of the dairy firm where I worked as head auditor, a loud commotion greeted me in the parking lot.
Martha was waiting near my car, flanked by two of Mark’s aunts. She held a worn rosary in one hand and pointed an angry finger at me with the other.
"You destroyed my son!" Martha screamed loud enough for my coworkers to hear. "He was fired this morning because of your wicked post! They walked him out of the building! How are he and Melanie supposed to live now?"
I stopped ten feet away, keeping my hands folded over my leather briefcase.
"Martha, Mark was fired because he committed corporate embezzlement by expensing his second wedding to his company card," I said clearly. "I didn't forge his expense reports. He did that all on his own."
"You drove him to it!" Martha sobbed, stepping closer. "You were always so cold, so obsessed with numbers and budgets! A real wife supports her husband through his mistakes! You need to sign half the house over to him as a settlement so he can start fresh with his new family!"
I almost laughed at the sheer audacity. "Sign half my house over to the man who cheated on me and committed bigamy?"
"It’s the Christian thing to do!" his aunt shouted.

"The legal thing to do," I countered, pulling out my phone, "is to enforce the restraining order I filed yesterday afternoon. You are currently trespassing on private corporate property, Martha. The security guards behind you are already calling the police."
Martha turned around just in time to see two uniformed security guards approaching. Her face twisted in rage, but the reality of handcuffs finally forced her back into her car. As she drove off, I adjusted my jacket, got into my car, and drove straight to my attorney's office.
