Chapter 9 - Consequences & Conviction
The judge’s ruling was swift and unyielding.
The marriage between Mark and me was granted a full annulment on the grounds of severe fraud, legally erasing his status as my spouse as if it had never existed.
Mark was ordered to pay full restitution for the damage to my home, forfeit any claims to all personal property, and face formal criminal charges for bigamy, attempted bank fraud, and felony break-in. He was sentenced to four years in state prison.
Martha and Brenda didn't escape unscathed either. Due to their persistent harassment, my legal team successfully obtained permanent civil restraining orders against both of them, backed by steep financial penalties if violated.
Outside the courtroom, Melanie approached me one last time. Her annulment papers were signed, and she was preparing to move back to her home state to rebuild her life.
"Thank you, Jessica," she said softly, her eyes clear for the first time since this nightmare began. "You saved me from a lifetime of misery."
