Chapter 10 - The Garden of Light

One year later.

The golden hour of a late summer evening blanketed the back lawn of the Mercer Estate in Lake Forest.

The green grass stretched down toward the calm, blue waters of Lake Michigan. A long wooden table set under a white pergola was covered in fresh flowers, burning candles, and a grand feast prepared by Mrs. Gable.

Aunt Sarah, who had fully recovered and moved into the guest house on the estate, sat near the head of the table, laughing as she fed small pieces of soft watermelon to fourteen-month-old Clara.

Clara was toddling everywhere now, wearing a little yellow sundress, her brown curls bouncing as she chased our golden retriever puppy across the soft grass.

I stood on the stone terrace overlooking the lawn, holding a glass of iced sparkling water, watching my daughter’s laughter echo across the water.

A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

Marcus pulled me back against his broad chest, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder, his warm breath tickling my neck.

"What are you thinking about, Mrs. Mercer?" he whispered softly, his hands resting gently over my stomach—where a tiny, three-month bump was just beginning to show once again.

I smiled, turning my head to press a sweet kiss against his lips.

"I was thinking about the day I thought I was going to lose everything on that cold hospital floor," I confessed softly, turning around in his arms to look up into his dark, loving eyes. "And how crazy it is that the worst day of my life led us to this."

Marcus looked down at me, his dark eyes filled with an intense, boundless devotion that made my heart flutter just as intensely as it had the day we met.

"You saved this family, Khloe," Marcus said gently, reaching up to stroke my cheek with his thumb. "You gave me a real home. You gave my life a purpose beyond money and power."

"Daddy! Mommy! Look!" Clara squealed happily, toddling across the lawn as fast as her little legs could carry her, holding up a yellow dandelion she had pulled from the grass.

Marcus laughed, dropping down onto one knee as our little girl launched herself into his arms. He lifted her high into the air, her joyful shrieks floating up toward the purple and gold sunset sky.

I walked down the terrace steps, joining my husband and my daughter on the green grass.

The shadows were gone. The red heel was broken. The blinking red light had exposed the truth and set us free.

As the stars began to twinkle over the quiet waters of the lake, we walked toward the candlelit table together—bound by love, protected by justice, and blessed with a future that no one could ever take away again.
