Chapter 3 - The High-Risk ICU

The high-risk ICU was a world of sterile white walls, soft glowing monitors, and the constant, rhythmic hum of oxygen pumps.

I lay in a specialized incline bed, two IV lines running into my veins—one carrying magnesium sulfate to prevent premature labor contractions, the other feeding vital fluids to support my bruised placenta. My ribs were wrapped tightly in medical bandages, every breath feeling like a hot blade sliding between my bones.

Marcus sat on a small vinyl stool beside my bed. He hadn't removed his suit jacket, which was stained with my blood and the tear marks from earlier. He held my left hand against his cheek, his eyes red-rimmed, staring at my face as if he were afraid I would vanish if he blinked.

"I'm sorry, Khloe," he whispered, his voice cracking into a hoarse sob. "I brought her into our lives. I trusted her with our corporate records. I brought a monster into our home, and she almost destroyed everything."

"You didn't know, Marcus," I said weakly, my thumb lightly stroking his scarred knuckle. "She hid it for six years. She tricked everyone."

"My father knew," Marcus said, his jaw tightening into a hard, dangerous line. "On the recording... she said my father ordered her to swap your mother's medication to seize your family's land trust in River North."

I closed my eyes, a heavy tear slipping down my temple onto the white pillow. "Your father passed away two years ago, Marcus. He took his secrets to the grave. But Isabella... Isabella was the executioner."

The heavy double doors of the ICU suite swung open, and Detective Thomas Kowalski of the Chicago Police Department walked in, holding a leather notepad and a tablet containing the encrypted file Marcus had transferred from the hospital camera server.

"Mrs. Mercer," Kowalski said respectfully, pulling up a chair on the opposite side of the bed. "I've just reviewed the CCTV footage from Suite 408. In twenty-four years on the force, I have rarely seen a more explicit, irrefutable recording of attempted murder and premeditated assault."

"Where is she?" Marcus asked, his tone dropping instantly into a cold threat.

"Isabella Vance is currently in a holding cell at the 1st District precinct," Kowalski replied. "We've charged her with attempted murder of an unborn child, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon—specifically that stiletto heel—and felony breaking and entering. Furthermore, based on her recorded confession regarding your mother, Mrs. Mercer, the State Attorney's office has re-opened the 2020 death investigation of Eleanor Dawson."

"Can she post bail?" I asked, my heart fluttering with residual terror.

Kowalski smiled—a cold, grim expression. "Judge Harrington reviewed the video fifteen minutes ago. Bail was denied outright. She's being held in high-security isolation until her arraignment on Monday."

I let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning my head back against the pillows.

"However," Kowalski added, his expression darkening as he looked between Marcus and me, "there is a problem."

Marcus straightened up. "What problem?"

"Isabella’s legal counsel—supplied by the Vance Corporate Syndicate—filed an emergency injunction ten minutes ago," Kowalski explained. "They are claiming the security camera in Suite 408 was installed illegally without a warrant or patient consent, and they're attempting to have the entire recording thrown out as inadmissible evidence under privacy violation laws."

Marcus let out a bitter, dark laugh. "Inadmissible? I paid forty million dollars to build that hospital wing, Detective. Every room in the executive suite is legally classified as a private medical research facility equipped with mandatory monitoring for high-risk clinical trials. The consent form was signed by Khloe when she was admitted."

He stood up, towering over the detective, his dark eyes burning with absolute authority.

"Tell her lawyers," Marcus whispered, "that if they try to suppress that video, I will air it on every network in North America by midnight tonight."
