Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Execution

The 50th floor of the Mercer Tower was a palace of glass, polished mahogany, and cold ambition.

At 9:00 AM on Friday morning, fourteen board members sat around the grand oval conference table. At the far end sat Julian Mercer—a thirty-five-year-old man in a five-thousand-dollar suit, wearing an expression of arrogant, mournful concern.

"Gentlemen, ladies," Julian began, standing up and smoothing his silk tie. "We all know the tragic events that occurred at St. Jude Hospital earlier this week. My cousin Marcus is currently under immense emotional strain. His wife is in critical condition, and his personal life has become a tabloid circus due to the arrest of his former financial director."

A few board members nodded sympathetically, murmuring among themselves.

"Under Section 4 of our corporate charter," Julian continued, leaning his hands on the table, "a chairman who is mentally or emotionally incapacitated during an active fiscal quarter may have his voting proxy suspended. I am proposing that I assume temporary executive authority until—"

The heavy double mahogany doors at the back of the boardroom slammed open.

The room fell dead silent.

I walked into the boardroom. I wasn't wearing a hospital gown or an apron. I wore a tailored ivory wool maternity suit, my hair swept back in a sleek bun, holding my chin high despite the sharp pain in my bandaged ribs.

Beside me walked Marcus, wearing a black double-breasted suit, his presence commanding and terrifying, flanked by Detective Kowalski and four uniformed Chicago Police officers.

Julian’s jaw dropped. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like he was about to vomit onto the polished mahogany.

"Khloe..." Julian stammered, stepping back from the table. "Marcus... what is the meaning of this? Khloe should be in bed! She's ill—"

"I am remarkably healthy, Julian," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted room as I took a seat at the head of the table. "Healthy enough to attend the liquidation of your shares."

Marcus walked slowly up to his cousin, stopping two feet away. He pulled a thick folder from his coat and tossed it onto the table in front of Julian.

"Page twelve, Julian," Marcus said smoothly. "Read the wire transfer logs from your private account in Zurich to Isabella Vance's shell company three hours before she entered my wife's hospital room."

The entire boardroom went dead quiet.

Julian stared at the folder as if it were filled with live vipers. His hands trembled so violently he couldn't even lift the cover. "Marcus... listen to me... she threatened me! Isabella had leverage on me—"

"Save it for the judge, Julian," Detective Kowalski interrupted, stepping forward and grabbing Julian’s wrist, pulling his arm behind his back with a sharp metallic CLICK of handcuffs.

"Julian Mercer," Kowalski announced, reading from a laminated card, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, and accessory to aggravated battery."

The board members gasped, several of them standing up in shock as the police hauled Julian out of the room, his frantic screams for mercy fading down the long marble corridor.

Marcus looked around the table at the remaining thirteen board members, who were all sitting in stunned, terrified silence.

"Is there any further discussion regarding my executive authority?" Marcus asked calmly.

Not a single hand was raised.
