Chapter 7 - The Midnight Storm

Three weeks after the trial, a fierce autumn storm battered the glass windows of the Mercer Estate in Lake Forest.

The wind howled through the tall oak trees, and heavy rain drummed against the roof. Inside, the grand living room was warm and quiet, lit by the glowing embers of a massive stone fireplace.

I sat on the plush velvet sofa, wearing a cozy oversized cardigan, sipping a cup of warm chamomile tea while reading a baby name book. Marcus was sitting on the rug near my feet, carefully assembling a white wooden crib he had insisted on building with his own hands rather than hiring contractors.

"Look at this one," I said, leaning down to show him the page. "Clara. It means 'bright' and 'clear'."

Marcus looked up, a soft, genuine smile spreading across his face—a smile I hadn't seen in six painful months. He set his screwdriver down, reaching up to gently lay his hand on my round, tight belly.

"Clara Eleanor Mercer," Marcus murmured, his eyes shining with deep emotion. "It's perfect, Khloe. Your mother would have loved it."

Suddenly, a sharp, intense pain shot across my lower abdomen, making me drop my tea cup onto the rug.

GASP!

"Khloe?!" Marcus immediately scrambled to his feet, catching my shoulders. "What is it? A contraction?"

"Marcus..." I gasped, grabbing his forearm, my breath catching in my throat as a warm wave of fluid soaked through my clothes and onto the sofa cushions. "My... my water just broke."

Marcus’s eyes widened in sudden, frantic panic. He looked at the window, where the rain was coming down in blinding sheets, lightning flashing across the dark sky.

"Okay. Okay! Don't panic," Marcus said, talking more to himself than to me as he grabbed the pre-packed hospital bag from the hallway closet. "The storm knocked out the main gate power ten minutes ago, but I have the manual override key."

He helped me stand up gently, supporting my weight as another heavy contraction hit me thirty seconds later. I groaned, leaning heavily against his chest, holding his neck.

"She's coming, Marcus," I whimpered, feeling a heavy, undeniable pressure low in my pelvis. "She's not waiting for the hospital!"

"Yes she is!" Marcus shouted frantically, picking me up in his arms despite my protests and carrying me out to the heated garage where his heavy black SUV was parked. "We're ten minutes from St. Jude's! Hold on, baby!"

He laid me back comfortably in the front passenger seat, adjusting the heated leather cushion, before jumping into the driver's seat and hitting the engine start button.

The powerful V8 engine roared to life.

As the heavy automatic garage doors opened into the howling storm, Marcus grabbed my hand, squeezing it tight as he launched the vehicle down the long, rain-slicked driveway toward our new future.
