Chapter 2 - THE CURTAIN FALLS ON A FOOL

The atmosphere inside the grand auditorium of Harrison Global Headquarters turned into absolute chaos. Camera flashes exploded like a relentless storm of lightning. Journalists scrambled to their feet, shouting questions, while high-profile investors stared in utter disbelief.

On the main stage, I stood tall and unyielding in my ivory white suit. Leo slept peacefully in my arms, completely undisturbed by the commotion around us.

Down in the second row, Victor was frozen. His eyes were wide, dilated with pure horror, as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the deepest depths of hell. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. Beside him, Serena had collapsed back into her seat, her makeup streaked with sweat, clutching her designer handbag as if it were a life raft on a sinking ship.

"Emma..." Victor finally choked out, his voice cracking violently. "You... you're... alive?"

I stepped closer to the edge of the stage, looking down at him with a look of calm, effortless disdain.

"Did you really believe fifty million dollars was enough to buy my life, Victor?" My voice rang clear through the high-end sound system, echoing into every corner of the room. "Did you really think you could push me off Mount Elbert, walk away with your mistress, and simply collect a payout on my baby and me?"

The auditorium went dead silent. The financial journalists immediately turned their cameras away from the stock market display and focused entirely on Victor. Gasps of shock ripples through the crowd.

"She's insane!" Victor suddenly shrieked, his composure shattering into a thousand hysterical pieces. He pointed a shaking finger at me, looking around at the reporters in a desperate attempt to regain control. "She's delusional! She suffered brain damage in a tragic hiking accident! I loved my wife! I tried to save her! This is a setup—a hostile corporate smear campaign by Harrison Global!"

I didn't lose my temper. I simply raised my hand slightly, nodding toward Marcus Vance.

At my signal, the massive LED screen behind the podium switched from the stock market ticker to a crystal-clear audio-visual display.

The audio track began to play.

"Is the claim filed?" Victor’s recorded voice vibrated through the professional sound system, sharp, cold, and utterly lacking humanity. "Yes, Mr. Carter," Serena’s recorded voice replied smoothly. "The search and rescue team will officially declare her missing in the storm by this evening... The insurance adjusters have already opened the expedited processing protocol." "Excellent," Victor’s laugh echoed through the room, accompanied by the distinct sound of a champagne cork popping. "To fifty million dollars, Serena. And to a fresh start in St. Barth’s."

The room erupted into collective outrage. Board members shouted in disgust, and reporters began frantically typing and broadcasting the live audio to millions of viewers worldwide.

Victor fell to his knees on the carpeted floor. The color had completely vanished from his face, leaving him a hollow, shivering wreck.

"No... that's fake... that's AI-generated!" Victor babbled, looking up at the ceiling as if begging the universe to reverse time. "Serena, tell them! Tell them it's fake!"

Serena didn't defend him. Seeing her entire dream of wealth crumble into a public nightmare, she slapped Victor across the face with all her remaining strength.

"Touch me again and I'll kill you, you idiot!" Serena screamed, tears breaking through her heavy mascara. "He forced me into this! It was all Victor's idea! He planned the whole thing!"

"You ungrateful bitch!" Victor yelled, lunging toward her, but before he could touch her, two giant Harrison Global security guards stepped in, grabbing his arms and pinning him to the floor.

William Harrison stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Victor like a judge declaring a death sentence.

"Victor Carter," my father said, his voice deep and echoing with thunderous authority. "As of five minutes ago, Harrison Global has officially bought out your primary lender. Your $30 million loan is now due immediately. Furthermore, because Harrison Global stock has surged eighty-five percent today, your short positions have been forcibly liquidated by your brokers. You are officially bankrupt."

Victor sobbed, his face pressed against the floorboards. "Please... Mr. Harrison... Emma... please, I'm the father of your child!"

I looked down at the man I had once foolishly loved, feeling neither pity nor anger—only a cold, absolute sense of justice.

"You ceased to be his father the moment you smiled while I fell," I said softly.

At that exact second, the heavy glass doors at the back of the auditorium swung open. Four Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, dressed in dark windbreakers with yellow lettering, marched down the center aisle.

"Victor Carter and Serena Miller," the lead FBI agent announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted first-degree murder, insurance fraud, corporate conspiracy, and wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Victor’s wrists, he lifted his head, locking eyes with me one last time. Tears and sweat mixed on his face, a pathetic shadow of the arrogant man who had toasted to my death just a few days ago.

"Emma... forgive me..." he whimpered as the agents dragged him toward the exit. "Emma!"

I didn't answer. I turned my back on him, cradling my baby boy closer to my heart as the doors closed behind them, ending their freedom forever.
