Chapter 3 - THE SHADOW OF THE RAVEN

The immediate public fallout of Victor and Serena’s arrest was swift and absolute. Within twenty-four hours, Carter Capital ceased to exist, its assets seized by federal authorities and handed over to Harrison Global’s legal team to cover the massive debts Victor had accumulated.
However, as I sat in the executive corner office on the top floor of the Harrison Global skyscraper, looking out over the misty skyline of Denver, I knew that Victor Carter was merely the small pawn on a much larger, far more dangerous chessboard.
My father walked into the office, carrying two cups of organic tea. He looked weary, the silver in his hair catching the soft afternoon light.
"The federal prosecutors are confident," William said, placing a cup on my desk. "Victor and Serena are facing minimum thirty-year prison sentences without the possibility of parole. They will spend the rest of their young lives behind bars."
"It's not over, father," I said softly, looking up from a set of financial ledgers Marcus had provided earlier that morning. "Victor was an ambitious fool, but he was never smart enough to organize offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands or set up complex short-selling algorithms on Wall Street by himself."
William’s eyes narrowed slightly. He sat down opposite me, his expression darkening. "You found something?"
I turned the digital ledger toward him.
"Look at the routing numbers on the high-interest bridge loan Victor secured," I pointed to a series of encrypted transactions. "The funds didn't originate from a standard private equity firm. They came from a holding company named Corvus Holdings—a company registered in Zurich, Switzerland."
William frowned, his fingers tapping rhythmically against his teacup. "Corvus... the Latin word for Raven."
"Do you know them?" I asked.
William took a slow breath, leaning back in his leather armchair. "Corvus Holdings is owned by Arthur Vance—the older brother of your security chief, Marcus Vance, and my former business partner from thirty years ago."
My heart skipped a beat. "Marcus's brother?"
"Arthur was the man who orchestrated the car crash in Chicago that killed your mother, Eleanor," William revealed, his voice laced with decades of suppressed pain. "He wanted complete control of Harrison Global's energy patents back then. When he failed to destroy me completely, he fled to Switzerland, building a dark financial syndicate that feeds on corporate sabotage and high-stakes extortion."
"So Victor wasn't just acting on greed," I deduced, pieces of the puzzle clicking together in my mind. "Arthur Vance found Victor, manipulated his greed, and gave him the resources to eliminate me. Arthur knew that if I died and Victor inherited my estate, Corvus Holdings could use Victor to drain Harrison Global from the inside."
"Exactly," William said, his fist clenching slightly. "Arthur was trying to finish what he started twenty-eight years ago. He wanted to wipe out my bloodline."
Right at that moment, the door to the office slid open, and Marcus Vance stepped inside. The former CIA operative looked visibly shaken, holding a secure satellite satellite phone in his gloved hand.
"Mr. Harrison, Emma," Marcus said, his voice tense. "I just received a call from Zurich. Arthur knows Victor failed. He knows Emma survived and that Harrison Global’s stock has reached an all-time high."
"What is his next move, Marcus?" William asked calmly, though the air in the room grew noticeably colder.
Marcus looked directly at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying solemnity.
"Arthur has initiated a hostile takeover protocol," Marcus reported. "He has quietly accumulated seventeen percent of Harrison Global's public shares through secondary international markets over the last five years. He just issued an emergency summons for an extraordinary Board of Directors meeting next Thursday in London. He intends to challenge your fitness to lead, claiming that your personal drama with Victor has compromised the stability of the corporation."
I stood up from my desk, walking over to the glass crib where Leo was sleeping soundly. I ran a gentle finger over my son's soft cheek.
"He tried to kill my mother," I said softly, my voice devoid of fear, filled only with absolute resolve. "He manipulated my ex-husband into trying to murder my son and me on that mountain. And now he wants to steal our family’s legacy."

I turned to face my father and Marcus.
"We aren't going to wait for his meeting in London," I declared, a sharp, dangerous light burning in my eyes. "We are going to Switzerland."
