Chapter 6 - The Fall of Vanguard

The chaos that erupts inside the bank vault was instantaneous and absolute.

“GET DOWN!” an agent barked, slamming Daniel against the metal safety deposit lockers. The folding knife clattered uselessly onto the floor as his arms were yanked behind his back and secured in heavy steel handcuffs.

Rebecca broke into hysterical sobs, dropping to her knees with her hands raised above her head. “I didn't do anything! It was all Daniel! He told me she was dead! He planned everything! Please don't shoot me!”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Daniel screamed, his face pressed hard against the cold steel of Box 408, his eyes burning with frantic, impotent rage. He turned his head sideways, glaring up at Victoria as she stood calmly beside Lead Special Agent Sarah Vance (no relation).

“You think this stops anything, Victoria?” Daniel spat, blood trickling from his lip where he had bumped the locker. “You have no physical proof of anything before today! My lawyers will have me out on bail before midnight! It’s your word against mine!”

Agent Sarah Vance pulled a tablet from her tactical vest and held it directly in front of Daniel’s face.

On the screen was a live feed from an interrogation room at the Federal Building downtown. Sitting in the chair, wearing an orange jumpsuit and signing a formal confession document under federal supervision, was Thomas Drake.

“Mr. Drake has just detailed the entire murder plot on record, Mr. Vance,” Agent Vance informed him coldly. “Including the modified hydraulic seal, the fifty-thousand-dollar offshore wire transfer from your private account, and your taped phone call from forty minutes ago demanding he meet you here for hush money.”

Daniel’s eyes widened in complete, soul-crushing despair. The last pillar of his denial crumbled away.

“Furthermore,” Agent Vance added, turning her gaze to Rebecca, “the twenty million dollars you attempted to transfer into Vanguard Holdings was intercepted forty-eight hours ago. You didn't steal Victoria Sterling’s wealth, Miss Davis. You executed a wire fraud transaction directly into a federal evidence escrow account. That carries a mandatory twenty-year sentence alone.”

Rebecca let out a choked wail, burying her face against the marble floor as agents hoisted her to her feet and marched her out of the vault.

As Daniel was hauled up by two federal officers, he found himself standing face-to-face with Victoria one last time. The charming, arrogant man who had spent nine years deceiving her was gone, replaced by a broken, pathetic criminal facing a lifetime behind bars.

“Why, Victoria?” Daniel whimpered, his voice cracking with a pathetic, desperate attempt at emotional manipulation. “Nine years... we were married for nine years! How could you do this to me? How could you destroy my life?”

Victoria looked at him, her expression devoid of anger, sorrow, or pity. There was only absolute, icy indifference.

“I didn't destroy your life, Daniel,” she said softly, reaching out to gently adjust the collar of his coat with a touch of quiet mockery. “You did that the moment you decided my life was worth less than my bank account.”

She stepped back, granting the agents room. “Take him away.”

The officers dragged Daniel Vance out through the subterranean corridors of the bank, his desperate shouts echoing off the cold stone walls until they died away completely into the afternoon traffic above.

Victoria stood alone in the quiet vault for a long moment. She reached down, picked up the velvet pouch from the table, and pulled out her grandmother’s ruby ring. She slipped it onto her finger, feeling its familiar weight.

Marcus walked into the room, holding two cups of warm coffee. He handed one to her, looking at her with quiet admiration.

“It’s over, Victoria,” Marcus said gently.

Victoria looked up at him, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in weeks. “No, Marcus. The defense is over. Tomorrow, we take back my company.”
