Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Reclamation

On Monday morning at 9:00 AM, the executive boardroom on the thirty-fourth floor of the Sterling Building was tense.

The thirty members of the board of directors, along with senior department heads and legal counsel, sat around the long oval mahogany table. Rumors had been swirling through the city all weekend following the dramatic, high-profile arrests at LaSalle National Bank, but the company’s official stance remained in chaos.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, a senior board member who had secretly aligned himself with Daniel over the past six months, eager to seize control of the firm’s lucrative commercial portfolio.

Arthur cleared his throat, tapping his pen against his glass. “Ladies and gentlemen, please come to order. As we all know, we have experienced an unprecedented tragedy with the loss of our founder, Victoria Sterling, followed by the astonishing... legal complications regarding her late husband, Daniel Vance.”

Several board members whispered uncomfortably among themselves.

“However,” Arthur continued, taking a authoritative posture, “Sterling Commercial Real Estate cannot operate in a vacuum. Shares have dropped twelve percent in pre-market trading. We must officially declare the CEO position vacant, appoint interim management, and initiate a full asset audit to stabilize investor confidence.”

“I object,” Marcus Cole’s voice rang out from the side gallery. He stood up, dressed in a sharp suit, holding a leather folder.

Arthur frowned condescendingly. “Marcus, you are a valued senior partner, but you do not hold voting control over the executive board. Victoria’s equity is currently frozen in probate—”

“Victoria’s equity is not in probate, Arthur,” a sharp, resonant voice echoed from the entrance of the boardroom.

The heavy double oak doors swung open.

Victoria Sterling walked into the room.

She was dressed in a pristine, royal blue power suit, her hair styled flawlessly, holding a leather portfolio under her arm. Her presence filled the room like a thunderclap.

Every single person in the boardroom gasped. Three board members stood up so fast their chairs scraped loudly against the floor. Arthur Pendelton dropped his pen, his eyes practically bulging out of his head.

“V... Victoria?!” Arthur blurted out, turning pale. “Is this... is this a joke? How are you here?”

Victoria walked down the center of the room with absolute authority, every eye tracking her movement in stunned silence. She walked straight to the head of the table, looking down at Arthur until he frantically gathered his papers and scrambled out of the master CEO chair.

Victoria sat down in her chair.

“I apologize for my brief absence,” Victoria announced, her voice calm, commanding, and radiating absolute power across the room. “As some of you may have heard on the news, my recent flight experienced a temporary deviation. However, reports of my death were greatly exaggerated.”

A ripple of nervous chuckles and relieved applause broke out among the loyal department heads near the back.

“While I was away,” Victoria continued, her gaze locking onto Arthur and two other board members who had supported Daniel’s takeover attempt, “certain individuals attempted to execute a fraudulent liquidation of this company’s assets. Thanks to the swift action of federal authorities, all company credit lines have been secured, zero equity was lost, and the perpetrators are currently occupying federal holding cells without bail.”

She opened her portfolio, pulling out a series of legal notices.

“Furthermore, effective immediately, I am exercising my founder’s rights to revoke the board status of Arthur Pendelton and his associates for gross negligence and breach of fiduciary duty pending a full internal investigation.”

Arthur stammered, looking around the room for support, but every other board member was staring at him with cold disdain. Realizing he was utterly defeated, Arthur gathered his briefcase and slunk out of the boardroom in shame.

Victoria looked around the long table at the remaining members—men and women who had built this company beside her for over a decade.

“Sterling Commercial Real Estate built this city’s skyline,” Victoria declared, resting her hands flat on the table. “And we are just getting started. Now... let’s get back to work.”

The boardroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause. Marcus stood near the doorway, clapping softly, a proud, warm smile on his face as he watched Victoria reclaim her empire.
