Chapter 9 - Clear Skies

Spring returned to Lake Michigan, melting the winter ice into clear, blue waters.

With the legal battles officially concluded, Victoria focused her energy on transforming her firm into something far greater than a real estate management company. She established the Julia Hayes Memorial Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charitable trust funded in part by the liquidated assets recovered from Daniel’s offshore accounts, dedicated to supporting families affected by aviation accidents and providing scholarships for young women entering commercial real estate.

Her company thrived. Sterling Commercial Real Estate expanded into three new national markets, its stock reaching an all-time high, praised across the business world as a model of corporate integrity and resilient leadership.

One Friday evening, as the sun began to set over the Chicago skyline, casting golden light across Victoria’s corner office, Marcus walked in holding two glasses and a bottle of fine champagne.

“You’re still at your desk, CEO,” Marcus teased gently, leaning against the edge of her table. “It’s seven o’clock on a Friday.”

Victoria laughed, closing her laptop and leaning back in her chair. “I was just reviewing the final lease agreements for the new River North project. We closed three major tenants today.”

Marcus poured the champagne, handing a glass to her. “To new beginnings?”

“To new beginnings,” Victoria smiled, clinking her glass against his.

They stood together by the floor-to-ceiling windows, drinking quietly as the city lights began to twinkle across the Loop.

Over the past two years, Marcus had been her absolute anchor. He had stood beside her when she was broken in the woods, protected her when she was hiding in the shadows, and fought beside her in every boardroom and courtroom. Through it all, a deep, profound affection had grown between them—a bond built on mutual respect, unwavering loyalty, and quiet, genuine love.

“Victoria,” Marcus said softly, turning to face her. He pulled a small, elegant navy velvet box from his pocket.

Victoria’s breath hitched slightly, her heart beating with a sweet, unexpected warmth.

Marcus opened the box. Inside lay a simple, stunning band of platinum set with a single, flawless yellow diamond that glowed like sunlight.

“I know you’ve been through hell,” Marcus said, looking into her eyes with pure, unreserved sincerity. “I know what it’s like to lose trust in the world. But for two years, watching you rebuild your life has been the greatest privilege of my life. I don't want to just be your business partner, Victoria. I want to build a life with you. Where you never have to doubt if someone has your back.”

Victoria looked at the ring, then up into Marcus’s warm, steady eyes. There were no false promises, no slick charm, no hidden agendas. Just the man who had proven his loyalty when her world was burning.

Tears of true happiness welled in her eyes. She smiled, stepping close to him, wrapping her arms around his neck.

“Yes, Marcus,” Victoria whispered, her voice filled with joyful certainty. “Yes. A thousand times yes.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger, holding her close as they shared a soft, passionate kiss against the backdrop of the glittering city skyline.
