Chapter 4 - The Legal Avalanche

On the morning of December 26th, the corporate offices of Ward Logistics were quiet. Most of the staff were still on holiday leave, but the executive floor was occupied. Evan Ward sat behind his massive mahogany desk, a glass of scotch already poured, despite the early hour. Bianca sat on the edge of the desk, swirling a manicured finger through her hair, while Sylvia paced the floor, looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below.

"I still don't understand why we had to come in today," Bianca pouted. "We were supposed to go look at the diamond bracelets at Cartier this morning, Evan."

"Relax, babe," Evan smiled, leaning back. "My ex-father-in-law made some vague threat on the phone yesterday. The old man is probably sending a pathetic demand letter from some strip-mall lawyer. I want to handle it today so we can enjoy the rest of the week without Nora’s crying holding us back."

"She really thought she could stay in that house forever," Sylvia cackled, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "As if a Ward belongs with a gardener’s daughter. I told you from day one, Evan, she was just a placeholder until someone of Bianca’s social standing came along."

At exactly nine o'clock, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite opened.

Instead of a single courier, a group of four individuals walked in. Leading them was a tall, sharply dressed woman in her late forties, carrying a silver briefcase. Beside her were two men in dark suits, and bringing up the rear was Colonel Arthur Ellis, dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that made him look every bit the military commander he once was. Nora walked beside him, her head held high, wearing a sleek black dress and a coat that radiated a quiet, powerful elegance Evan had never seen on her before.

Evan stood up, an annoyed scowl crossing his face. "What is this, a circus? Nora, I told you to keep your father away from my business."

The sharply dressed woman stepped forward, placing her silver briefcase on Evan’s desk. She popped the latches with two crisp clicks.

"Mr. Ward, my name is Victoria Vance, senior managing partner of Vance, Sterling & Associates," she said, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. "We represent Colonel Arthur Ellis and Mrs. Nora Ward."

Sylvia laughed loudly. "Vance, Sterling? The international firm? Don't make me laugh. A retired old man can't afford your retainer."

Victoria Vance didn't even look at Sylvia. She pulled a thick document from her briefcase and slid it across the desk, stopping it right in front of Evan.

"At exactly 8:00 AM this morning, a formal declaration of default was filed with the State Supreme Court and the Securities and Exchange Commission," Victoria announced. "We are here to serve you with the immediate call-in of the five-million-dollar principal loan provided by Colonel Ellis on October 14th, 2021."

Evan’s smile faltered. "Loan? That was an investment. It was part of the marriage agreement."

"I suggest you turn to page twenty-four, Mr. Ward," Victoria said calmly. "Clause 14B. The addendum you signed in the presence of a notary public three days prior to your wedding."

Evan picked up the document, his hands suddenly feeling heavy. He flipped through the pages until he found the clause. As his eyes scanned the text, the color rapidly drained from his face.

"What is it, Evan?" Sylvia asked, her laughter dying out as she noticed her son’s sudden paleness. "What does it say?"

"This... this can't be legal," Evan stammered, his voice dropping an octave. "Infidelity? Domestic abandonment? Endangerment of dependents? This is ridiculous! You can't prove any of this!"

Nora stepped forward, looking her husband dead in the eye. "At 10:15 PM on Christmas Eve, the security cameras of our neighbors, the Hendersons, captured clear, high-definition footage of your mother throwing my daughter’s clothes into trash bags, and you standing by the door while Bianca walked inside wearing my silk robe. It also captured you locking the door behind us as a blizzard raged. Furthermore, I have logs of your text messages to Bianca dating back eighteen months, extracted from our shared family cloud account."

"You spied on me?" Evan shouted, slamming his hand on the desk.

"You left your account logged into the iPad Sophie uses for her cartoons, Evan," Nora replied coldly. "You weren't careful. You were just arrogant."

Victoria Vance leaned in. "The total amount due, including the contractually mandated twenty percent compounding interest backdated five years, is exactly twelve million, four hundred and sixty-two thousand, eight hundred and ten dollars. You have forty-eight hours to wire the full amount to the escrow account listed on page two."

"Twelve million?!" Sylvia shrieked, dropping her coffee cup. It shattered on the hardwood floor. "We don't have twelve million cash! Every dollar we have is tied up in the new automated shipping hub!"

"Then I suggest you re-read the default terms, Mrs. Ward," Victoria said with a chilly smile. "If the funds are not verified by 9:00 AM on December 28th, controlling ownership of Ward Logistics, including all real estate assets, vehicles, and active contracts, defaults entirely to Colonel Ellis’s designated beneficiary. Nora Ellis."

Bianca looked back and forth between Evan and Nora, her eyes wide with panic. "Evan? What does this mean? Are we... are we broke?"

Evan couldn't answer. He collapsed back into his chair, staring at his own signature on the paper as if it were a death warrant.
